No thanking for faves, please! by ZuTheSkunk No thanking for faves, please! by ZuTheSkunk
Dear friend, I'm afraid that no matter what your intentions are and how much you're grateful for giving you a fav, leaving "Thanks for fav" comments is SPAMMING. I'm serious. Just take a look at the comments section on the main page of literally any DeviantArt user's account you can find. Such comments are EVERYWHERE. When you favourite anything, there's a 50% chance that you'll get one.

You may be asking yourself "But why would this be a bad thing?" Well, it's not a bad thing per se. It's nice to know that someone is grateful for faving their artworks. And if you just started using DeviantArt and created an account here, then you'll probably be actually happy for receiving such comments. You will likely still be happy after 10 such comments. Maybe you'll still be happy after receiving 50 of them.

...But when you receive the very same comment for the 1000th time, and your comments section starts looking like the "Spam" folder on your e-mail account, filled with the very same, copypasted message that you are always notified about and are forced to at least glance at it before removing it... that kinda gets annoying, you know?

Do those messages serve any real purpose? Not really.
Are they useful? Not really.
Do you achieve anything for receiving or writing them? Not really.

Can they be annoying? Yes, they can.
Are you wasting your and other people's time when writing them? Sadly, yes you do.
Are they mixing up with comments that may actually have some purpose? Yes, they do.
Are they giving non-famous people a false moment of "OMIGOSH SOMEONE NOTICED MY ART" when they see the "1 Feedback" message, only to realize that it's just ANOTHER "Thanks for fav" comment? YES, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, YES!

So please, be understanding, and use comments to either talk about one's art and/or the artist himself, or to leave any questions that may bother you, but PLEASE, DO NOT LEAVE COMMENTS THANKING PEOPLE FOR FAVES. Okay? Please?

(Granted, it's been a long while since the last time I personally had this problem, but the point still stands. I am interested in reading comments regarding my deviations, art or something like that, not this unoriginal, copypasted "Thx 4 fav" stuff.)

Used this in my journal. "Thanks for the fave" messages already annoy me to heck. I totally agree with the last 4 paragraphs EVERYTHING in the description too.

OMG! thank you SO much for making this! i have had this problem for 3 years now! it got to the point were i had to post over 20 HUGE stamps saying not to thank me (as an experiment), and even THAT didn't work!
so apparently, not even the biggest and brightest stamps would prevent those obnoxious messages.
oh, you want to know something funny? people are thanking others for VISITS now, yeah, people will thank you for merely clicking there icon.

I sometimes thank for faves, but I never copy paste something!
And sometimes I even draw something in the comment.

Copy pasting "Thx for the fave" is just weak.

But Ill have to do it later, In a better machine,
The thumb just looks so tiny XD

I actually managed to make a note on my profile telling people not to thank me for the faving their work.
It seems it works, altough theres some dude that ALWAYS posts that goddamn message over and over again
The worst part? Im already watching him, his art is good, BUT WHY THE HELL IS HE THANKING ME!!!!!
Dont you have enough with me watching you?

I, most than all, hate those goddamn thx 4 the fave comments composed of only fuckin emoticons and even the image itself, or a link to it.
Im one of those non famous artists that suffer the feedback deception.

Sorry if I sound way too butthurt, but im so done with those comments ):<

I've thanked one deviant for favoriting a piece of mine, and that was Tsitra360, who I really look up to as an artist, and I get too many favorites to thank most people who do so, but what about watches? Are those annoying as well? Serious question, because I try my best to thank everyone who watches me, because I genuinely appreciate it, and a lot of times that's my only direct interaction with a watcher, which is important for me because I want to be able to say I've interacted in some positive way or form with every one of my watchers, and I want them to realize I acknowledge them and am actually thankful they like my work enough to follow me, but would you consider it spam? I'm not criticizing, or trying to sound hostile in any way, but I've never seen anyone on the site say it annoys them, and I've seen just as many -if not, more- comments on profiles thanking someone for a watch, and I'm now curious to see if this actually offends people.

The thing about thanking for faves that makes it annoying is that it's ridiculously common. I think I rarely ever saw anyone thanking me for a watch though, so I don't really mind that. So if you think that it's an okay thing to do, then I think there's no harm in continuing to do it. :)

Meh, your channel, your decisions. Of course it won't be me the one entitled to make you change your mind, but I find it an exaggeration. In a good sense, of course, no offense implied. It is simply an opinion of mine, that derives from the "The customer is always right" saying. Of course this doesn't apply to jerks and peope who go against the rules of the website, but as long as they don't do anything wrong, and a "Thanks for the fav" sure isn't wrong in itself, even if I admit it might be annoying I let people do it. Same for the "Thanks for the watch", "Thanks for the comment", Thanks for insertrandomfeatureofdA", etc. Not to mention that whenever I look at my stats, I cannot help but thinking that everything is possible only because of those people who come to my page and see my artwork. Limiting their freedom on something they could actually do just because "I don't like it" or "It annoys me" seems like a misuse of power. As an artist I am the one owing something to the people who look at my page, not the opposite.

But as you can see, this is just an opinion, not anger - I actually am not even the kind of person who thanks other for their faves, only sometimes, and not always, for the watches. There's only one part of the description that actually makes me turn up my nose, but it's (almost) unrelated from the main point. That's it though, nothing more: I only wanted to express my thoughts, it's not the first time I visit your channel and I think I have some Polish friends who actually told me about you once or twice.

Cool art, indeed ^^ But this is another matter, of course.

Actually, I was being sarcastic. But, in all seriousness I think this post is a bit over the top. I mean I have the same problem to. After a while of seeing nothing but "thanks for the fav" it just gets old. I would not go so far as calling it spamming though, mostly it is just people who appreciate the fact that at least someone notices their work. Calling someone a spammer is synonymous with calling someone a troll.

I do not intend to call anyone a spammer, unless they indeed do it excessively.

Like I said: while the motivation behind the act might be innocent, the act itself repeated relentlessly by numerous people does end up being spamming. It clutters your comment section with stuff of little or no real significance, and you're notified about it each time it happens. It's annoying. And I, personally, don't want to see it.

One person leaving a small sticky card saying "Thank you" on your monitor is a nice surprise. Multiple people doing it every single day is a nuisance. And even after the problem is over, seeing any more cards like that on your monitor makes your eye twitch.

See what I'm saying here?

Yea, I see what you are saying. I don't mean to get personal, but have you ever posted a "thanks for the fav" whenever you first joined DA. I admit, I used to but I don't anymore. Usually it is just people trying to make a name for themselves. It is not easy making a name for yourself as you may know.

I don't think I ever did. I think that when I first saw people doing it, I decided not to do it myself because of not wanting to be a "special snowflake" among other people doing exactly the same thing. Or maybe I did, I can't remember. It was 4 years ago.

What I do remember is that I never actively used DA due to considering it to be a pretty pointless endeavour, with nobody noticing what I do. It rather quickly changed when I made my first pony-related image and learned about the existence of DA groups when one of them requested it to be added. And from there, everything escalated over time.

Now I have almost 4000 watchers (I'm getting an impression that this amount is undeserved), I'm quite good at pony vectors (I didn't know how to make vectors at all when I started) and I visit DA every day. Who would have thought?

Oh, you got popular whenever the fandom was becoming popular. Yea, nowadays I see lots of people jumping on the pony band wagon. The sad thing for them is, unless you started out early, I would say around 2010, 2011ish, there is no way to be popular anymore. The superstars of the fandom, especially the ones who came up with the 3D renditions, are well established and I don't see any more popping up. I myself just do it as a way to learn Inkscape because lets face it, ponies are not that hard to vector.

Fav'd. I'll be expecting some mail from you...

But yeah, even as a relatively new artist, while I appreciate the gesture, it just seems kind of pointless. Fortunately, it's not an endemic I've suffered much from. Then again, I tend to be tightfisted with favorites, comments, and similar devices, both here and on other websites. I am a ghost, here and gone, with only a single view left as evidence I even exist.

Some folks consider it just simple good, old fashioned, manners. I bust my tail on something, you fave it, and I will thank you for that piece, and that piece only. If I drop a link on your page out of the blue, and say, "Look at this! Isn't it awesome?" That is true spamming, and yes, it can be annoying.

Thank you for your time.

It's a one thing to genuinely thank somebody for faving. It's another to just keep posting the same copypasted message over and over each time somebody faves your work, which is what the majority of people out there do (maybe not everybody, but exceptions are rare). And at this point, isn't it kinda spamming? As in, unwanted copypasted messages that clutter your inbox and the comments section?

This kind of people needs to be allowed to customize the speech bubble that appears over their avatar when you favourite something from them. You know, so they would be able to change it into some elaborate, meaningful "Thank you" that appears automatically. And that's it! This would ultimately terminate the problem. But sadly, DA will probably never think of that...
