Winter Diesel in the Prairieland by zulumike Winter Diesel in the Prairieland by zulumike
This is a CSX model EMD GP40-2 diesel engine hauling freight through a crossing in Decatur, Illinois. Over 65 trains move through Decatur everyday, a major railroad yard and major central east/west corridor route for the four rail companies of the USA.

This artwork is based on my personal photo collection that I took during a switching operation during the winter at the Norfolk Southern switching yards. I painted and edited the photo to show some power and winter mood using GIMP and Paint.Net.

This is very well done, literal workhorses powering through the snow.

Thank You, The train was accually moving very slow through the double crossing, but I wanted to show some power by enhancing this cold winter day.

Thank You.

I actually shot this on a calm winter day in Jan, 2012 while it was switching cars. Through art I have made it into a "powerhouse".

A combination of scenes, I am sure.

I've spent enough time in the lands of horizontal snow to know the feel. :-)

The only change was adding a new sky BG. The original sky was a bright blue clear day. I wanted a more subdue sky. Added snow turbulance, textured the engines etc. using Gimp.
I like to "dirty" the objects I do, to give a feel of working and everyday use.

Working with snow is very similar to working with water and waves. I customizes my brushes, started digital art about three years ago at screenshotworld.com ( aviation art).

Thanks Graham, I have been taking photos of trains for a couple of years.
I thought it was time to put some of those photos to more of an art look.

Aircraft, Ships and Trains, its all good.
