Battle of Midway by zulumike Battle of Midway by zulumike
Here is a story and illustration of a hero during the the Battle of Midway:

Lt. Commander Richard Best (jg) leads the way of his VB-6 pilots from the USS Enterprise during the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942.

Virtually unopposed, Yorktown's dive-bombers attacked Soryu making three lethal hits with 1,000 pound bombs and setting her on fire. Enterprise's planes, also hit the Akagi and Kaga, effectively destroying all three carriers. The bombs from the Dauntlesses caught all of the Japanese carriers in the midst of refueling and rearming operations, causing devastating fires and explosions.

Lt. Commander Best is credited with destroying the Akagi with a direct bomb hit that punched through the flight deck and exploded in the upper hangar, in the middle of 18 Nakajima B5N2 planes, parked there . He also participated in the attack on the last remaining Japanese carrier - the Hiryu, possibly scoring one of the four hits. After the battle, Best was awarded the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

The AC is a free download from SimV for FSX. BG'S from Mayyang.com. & personal collections. Carrier ref from a photo.
This artwork is a combination of painting and editing done with GIMP.

Thanks for Looking.

Cheers, Mike

Love the Dauntless.  Supposedly she made for a decent fighter in a pinch.  Surprisingly maneuverable when she wasn't carrying bombs.  Not something you'd want to dogfight with, but certainly enough to deal with knocking down enemy bombers.

The SBD's most important contribution to the American war effort, doubtless, came during the Battle of Midway in early June 1942. Four squadrons of Navy SBD dive bombers attacked and sank or fatally damaged all four Japanese fleet carriers present—three of them in the span of just six minutes (AkagiKagaSōryū and, later in the day, Hiryū). They also caught the Midway bombardment group of four heavy cruisers, heavily damaging two of them, the Mikuma so badly that she had to be scuttled. Data from Wilkipedia.

Best flew off the Enterprise not the Yorktown. I think you're confusing him with LCDR Max Leslie who led VB-3 off the Yorktown and scored the fatal hits ont he Carrier Soryu..

hmmm...
in your picture is looks like the island of USS Yorktown is on port side of the carrier but every us-carrer has the island on its starboard side...
OR ...
the planes were starting in the wrong direction (from bow to stern)...

nevertheless a real nice picture :+fav:

(sorry for my bad english)
