H.P. Lovecraft's Mother Hydra

H.P. Lovecraft’s ‘Mother Hydra’

Idol such as those the ‘Esoteric Order of Dagon’ might worship.

From H.P. Lovecraft’s A Shadow Over Innsmouth -
All in the band of the faithful - Order 0' Dagon - an' the children shud never die, but go back to the Mother Hydra an' Father Dagon what we all come from onct ... Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn! Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah-nagl fhtaga - "

My original is made from Super Sculpy (copies are cast in resin) and painted to resemble brass with aging. It’s about 9" tall.

Copies of this sculpture are available for $75   plus shipping.  Contact me at for details.

Excellent. She looks like a  great companion piece with your Dagon.  Clap

Thanks. I hope they are a happy couple.
Doh...should have read the more recent comments.  Yay.

Happens to me all the time, too.
Creepy good as always.  Were you planning on selling casts of this, my Dagon statue let me know he'd like a friend  ;)

Yep. Think I sent you a note.

Ia! Ia! Is there any deal if one were to purchase a Father Dagon and Mother Hydra?

Hi, I've just finished the mold for casting the 'Mother Hydra' and found out that finishing this figure is a lot of work. I'll probably be selling Mother Hydra for $75. Contact me at for 'volume' discounts :-)

very good, looking very catching with the brass color and patina.

Excellent sculpt, Joe!  Great design and handling of all those details- especially all the scales, which I know is tricky!  What is she holding in her left hand, it looks a lot like a symbol from some "other" religion? ;)
zombiequadrille's avatar
Thanks, Paul. I put the scales on one at a time... The fish symbol was apparently around centuries before it was picked up by the more modern cult, er religion, and I figured it might go all the way back to Mother Hydra, "what we all come from onct.." as Zadock Allen put it.

Does that mean you sculpted the scales individually and then placed them on the sculpture?

I didn't know that symbol was older, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering they absorbed an enormous amount from many other pre-existing religions.  With that in mind, it really does make sense that it well could have belonged to an even older cult.

I have little 'cookie cutters' that I used to cut out the scales and then stuck them on one at a time. It was a bit time consuming and probably could have been done more easily with a little incising tool, but I'm happy with the results.
More magnificent work as always.
