PROLOGUE — THE NIGHTMARE THAT NEVER ENDED

Rachael Hawkins doesn’t sleep anymore.

When she does, she dreams of fangs at her throat, of fire and sand, of ancient kings who refuse to die. She wakes up tasting ash and blood—Dracula’s bite still burning in her memory, even though the curse is gone.

Halloween is days away.

Her friends and former roommates, Lisa and Katie, try to pull her back toward normalcy. They’re graduating soon. This might be their last real celebration together. They decide on a group costume for the Sacramento State Halloween party:

  • Rachael — Cinderella

  • Katie — Belle

  • Lisa — Elsa

Princesses.

Survivors pretending to be fairy tales.

ACT I — THE CRASH

Late afternoon.

The sky over Old Sacramento roars. A military transport plane screams out of the clouds and crashes into the historic district in a fireball of twisted metal and burning debris. Sirens flood the city.

Only one person survives. A soldier named Eric. He staggers from the wreckage, bloodied, half-deaf, staring at the shattered remains of a sarcophagus that should never have left Egypt. Inside—nothing.

As first responders scramble, wind carries burning papers across the streets of Sacramento. They rain down like cursed snow. Rachael catches one. Hieroglyphs. Her hands shake as she translates instinctively—knowledge she wishes she didn’t have.

ACT II — THE LEGEND OF KHARIS

Thousands of years earlier.

An Egyptian named Andoheb journeys to the Hill of the Seven Jackals, answering a royal summons from the High Priest of Karnak. There, he learns the truth of Kharis.

Kharis was a temple guardian who stole the sacred tana leaves, believing they could resurrect the dead Princess Ananka, whom he loved beyond death.

For his blasphemy, he was mummified alive. The tana leaves were buried with him. They did not restore life. They prolonged death. Three leaves brewed under a full moon sustain Kharis’ existence.

Nine leaves restore his movement if he is disturbed. Eric overhears Rachael’s translation. And realizes why the plane crashed where it did.

ACT III — THE CITY THAT GROWS THE CURE

Sacramento’s trees. Their leaves. They are tana. Imported decades ago. Decorative. Harmless—until now.

Eric understands the crash wasn’t an accident. It was guided. Kharis is free. And if he gathers enough leaves, he will never die.

Rachael returns to the crash site with Eric. The sarcophagus is empty. Footprints trail away—dragging, heavy, relentless.

Halloween night falls.

ACT IV — HALLOWEEN IS HUNTING NIGHT

Children flood the streets in costumes. Candy bowls sit unattended.

Kharis moves through the city unseen—wrappings soaked, body preserved by stolen chemistry and ancient ritual. He tears through a hunting supply store, stealing canisters, tubing, chemicals. He knows how to make the serum.

He appears at Sacramento State University.

Rachael freezes as memories crash back—Rameses, plagues, blood-filled showers. The past has found her again. Kharis stalks the campus slowly, methodically, attacking security, overturning displays, snapping limbs with inhuman strength. Rachael and Eric hide. Kharis pauses inches from them. Listening. Smelling. Then moves on. Until— He attacks again.

This time, he takes Katie.

ACT V — THE REINCARNATION DELUSION

Lisa and Rachael follow the trail—mud, torn leaves, broken bodies.

In Kharis’ mind, Katie is no longer herself. She is Ananka reborn. He prepares the tana serum, convinced immortality will bind them together forever. He plans to inject them both.

Rachael reaches them just outside campus grounds. She opens fire. Bullets tear through wrappings— And do nothing. Kharis does not fall.

Katie screams that she remembers the legend. Kharis cannot consume more serum. The ritual sustains him—but too much breaks the spell.

As Kharis raises the canister to his lips, Rachael fires. The container shatters. Green fluid sprays across the ground. The immortality fails. For the first time in centuries— Kharis can burn.

Rachael steps forward. Flicks her lighter. And turns him into fire.

  • The hieroglyphs

  • The photographs

  • The name Kharis

History cataloged. Danger archived. And somewhere— Something else is reading.
