Description

Underwater stunt double Tyler Holt is about to go under the sea on the set of the next Hollywood underwater film, "Atlantis: Lost Secret", but what he finds isn't a prop for the movie, but what he finds something that only science can explain, a skeletal hand with webbed fingers of a creature from the Devonian Age. Taking the hand as evidence, he and the crew on their yacht are ambushed by Indonesian Pirates but are able to hold them off until a shark swims up and eats their captain, forcing the pirates to retreat. Upon arriving back in Miami, Tyler takes the skeletal hand to Florida International University, to see if the Anatomy professors can analyze the creature.

While waiting for results from the Anatomy professors, Tyler makes his way around the campus, he notices an old friend of his from high school, Harrison, as he came to help his little sister pack up to go home because school is out for the summer. As Tyler helps Harrison with packing up his sister's stuff to go home, the Anatomy professors find something very interesting about the hand he found. The hand is from a creature that reigned over the world during the Devonian Era, but as the ice age came in, it wiped out the entire species, the place where the species died out, was in the Amazon. So Tyler calls up a crew of technical filmmakers, including his college roommate Lena Watson, the cinematographer. Going aboard Tyler's private yacht to the Amazon, to find the origins of the creature, if it's still alive.

Setting up camp for the night just after arriving in the Amazon, an amphibious hand reaches into the tent, and the only sound is the sound guy screaming. Tyler hears the screaming just after taking a leak into the river. After arriving at the tent where the technical crew is sleeping, all they find is a head ripped off of a body. Tyler spots the creature that made the killing fleeing back into the river, with three bullets that missed. The hand he noticed on the creature is an exact match to the one he found in Florida.

The entire species isn't wiped out, only one exists, and is the last of its kind, and is seen in many parts of history, the most notable being the Jersey Shore attack of 1916, which killed four people, but the media covered it up with a shark. In the real history, it was a shark, and the attack became the inspiration for JAWS, which was then turned into a film by Steven Spielberg.

What is supposed to be a documentary turns into a found footage horror movie.

Daylight hits, and the hunt for the creature begins. 3 hours later, nothing. At this point, Lena is about to give up on the search. Tyler has one option: keep looking, and the river is taking them to a lagoon, some say it's called the "Black Lagoon," from where nobody returns. Tyler decides to call the creature"Gill-Man." While still having nothing found, Lena's camera is still rolling and decides that the editor should try to do a time-lapse edit to turn 9 hours of footage into 50 seconds. Upon reaching deeper waters, Lena decides to go for a swim, but due to her beautiful appearance, she is stalked by Gill-Man. But out of nowhere, the creature is on Tyler's yacht and snatches Lena. Tyler always knew that something was stalking them and that the stalker is the one who killed the sound guy.

Tyler goes down with his diving gear to chase after the Gill-Man to save Lena, but as part of this documentary. It is late at night, and the creature has made it to his secret cave to where he wants Lena as a host to repopulate his species. Before he can begin, Tyler arrives and is revealed that when the creature snatched Lena, Tyler had a tracker on the creature, so he knew where Lena was being taken. And of course, has a GoPro linked to Lena's camera. Tyler always carries a harpoon with him, and he does, only to fight the Gill-Man. As the Gill-Man destroys the harpoon, Tyler had no weapons left, but Lena always carried a gun in her panties and a round of bullets in her bra. Tyler covers Gill-Man with bullets, and as the body falls into the lagoon, the body floats down the bottom of the cave, but Tyler and Lena carry the body to the river to where it's body will be carried out to see and be lost forever.

Just getting back to Florida, docking the yacht, there was no applause. Reporters, news outlets, and journalists want Tyler to give out the story about what happened in the Black Lagoon. As Lena comes up to Tyler with the camera, the footage of what happened is still fresh. Hollywood ends up approving of the footage and decides to snap all the clips together and transform it into a found-footage documentary.

In a post-credits scene, Tyler finds himself at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, for a few drinks after the premiere. While there, he is visited by a woman, somewhere around his age, she reveals herself to be Rachael Hawkins, who recently graduated from Sacramento State, giving him a calling card about her contact on a monster hunting program, where she works.
