Royal Gryphons

Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Aves Order: Cathartiformes Family: Teratornithidae Genus: Brontoraptor Species: Regalis Biology: The Royal Gryphon is the dominant predator of the Talon Peaks, a northern range of the Sky-Toucher Mountains. It’s close relative the White-Bellied Gryphon [Brontoraptor albus], which is smaller but possesses a significantly wider range across the Great Ice Wastes, is significantly more common, and despite the names neither are closely related to the Hippogryphs of the Grass Sea or the dwarf gryphons of Whisper Wood and the southern forests. A Note from the Editor: In compiling this set of texts on the nature of organized magic in Kthonera, it has come to my attention that your primary author, Adept Tzittas, has put some fanciful inaccuracies in the early segments of the text regarding the nature of elementals and other spirits which reside in the Astral. Adept Tzittas is an excellent scribe, and an expert on the different schools and their arts, but has very little practical experience with the Astral and its denizens. While the following text is hardly complete, it remains one of the Schools' best guides to the Astral. The fragments presented below are an excerpt from Master El

Mountain Trolls

Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Xenathra Family: Megalonychidae Genus: Vorax Species: Mons Biology: The Mountain Troll is one of the fiercest predators known in its home habitat of the Sky-Toucher mountain range. Despite this, V. mons and its close relative the Forest Troll, are related to such non-threatening creatures as gargoyles, the numerous species of tarasque, and barghest. V. mons is a massive animal, weighing in excess of 1,400 lbs and when reared up reaching nearly 9 feet tall, with a squat, heavy skull, four large canines in the typically toothless front section of the jaw, a short tail, and highly robus

Of all the Physical Arts, the School of Restoration is something of the middle path, a blending of esoteric power and physical application of more practical knowledge. The school was founded on the border of Kvoluhan and Quvija in the year 2493 BL by the clerics of Naaphel- goddess of magic, wisdom, secrets, and faith -who began to be overwhelmed by a massive pandemic that broke out in Kthonera due to a influx of human immigrants, tradesmen, and slaves carrying their diseases with them. The School of Restoration was meant to be a place of study and experimentation, and from within these walls they would be able to discover how to manage the p

The Five Schools are generally separated into two major disciplines- the Physical and Mental Arts. The Physical Arts encompass the schools of Destruction, Alteration, and Restoration, while the Mental Arts are the schools of Conjuration and Illusion. For simplicity's sake, we shall be starting with the most easily understood of the disciplines, the Physical Arts, and the school which exemplifies this discipline the most prominently is the School of Alteration. The School of Alteration was founded in 2625 BL by Nylaansef magi and Sylnquel totem-warriors in the dense boreal forests near the foothills of the Talon Peaks, set on the border of wh

Cyrnnal, Central Cyram Capital of the Cyramites, East of the Tin Hills and Whisper Wood Cyrnnal was all Athdar had ever known- the boy had never left the town, nor ever had the desire to. It had been built by the families of the warriors of Cyrus the Falcon, the exiled king of their Borian brothers and sisters across the sea, or so the story went. It was a thriving community, built on the only hill in the area for miles around. At the top of the hill was the Falcon Hall, shaped like a mighty boat turned upside down, the pillars elaborately carved and hung with banners and shields. The rich homes atop the hill were guarded by mighty walls of

The next level of focus is upon the House of the Mind, and from there its relations to Elemental Theory. The House of the Mind is a representation of the mage's consciousness within the Astral, a framework to stop their mind from floating away on the currents of the landscape of the soul. Each house is as different as the mind that created it, but most share a basic shape. Most houses have three floors and a basement of some kind, and while the whole represents the self, each floor is a part of the consciousness. The top floor expresses the thought-based, logical self; the second floor represents the intuition and the thoughts which come unpr

Magic is a complex, inherent part of our world, no matter what the clerics say. It is treated with great superstition and most of the time not even half of the respect it deserves. I have spoken with some of the greatest theorists the College has to offer, and almost all have agreed that the biggest blow against our art, is a a lack of definition of what exactly magic is. It is this lack of definition, lack of concrete terms to say 'this is what it is, this is what it does' is what gives room for the superstitions and the fear of the unknown room to exist. As such, while this text will later deal with the Schools and Arts of magic, along with

“It was like looking into the wells of the Abyss. They came out of nowhere, shaped like men but acting nothing like them, their hair a tangled mass of dreadlocks, long, tusk-like teeth bared in a savage snarl. Apart from a single scream at the beginning of their assault, they made no noise other than the occasional grunt or hiss- they were horrifyingly silent, and all their rage was focused into their gaze. If I had the option, I’d never fight them again.”- Hyrakian soldier describing an assault during the Orchish Incursions of c. Gideon Mantell on Dragons

Summer 1839, London- From the Desk of Dr. Gideon Mantell My wife has left me, and Walter has left for New Zealand by way of China. My one consolation is that Hannah remains with me. My recent articles on Iguanodon and Hylaeosaurus have raised much attention to my work in both England and the world. Many are calling me the premier authority on prehistoric reptiles, much to the frustration of Sir Richard Owen. Walter has written, saying that he has sent me a large package, and that I shall recognize it by the size of the crate and the ice that is packed around the specimen within. I cannot say that I am not intrigued, but it will probably be s

On the Evolution of Dragons- the Diplopterna

Dr. David Cross For the Opus Sientia "On the Evolution of Dragons" The Diplopterna were among the most specialized, powerful, and successful of all the draconic families. They were the first dragons to exceed a length of two meters in length, and exceed a wingspan of four meters. Other than that, they are often seen as rather generic dragons. However, unlike the other Draconidae the Diplopterna didn't lose all their ankle bones when they lost two of their toes- instead, they had dual ankle bones, which gave them the unique advantage of being able to run long distances- the dual bones acting like shock absorbers, meaning that they were the

Historia Dracones 2

Den Helder, June 17 1432 Anno Dominus- From the Journal of Nikolas Andronicus I have been so busy that I've forgotten to even write in my journal- rather, I spent all my time in the marshes, observing the Heron Dragon, sketching it, trying to understand it. I keep returning to the one lair I know to be inhabited- I announce my pressence by dropping a fish on the ground near its burrow, and then sit on the rock I'd fallen back on in my first encounter with it. It's funny- Firenze [Or Florence in English] was attacked just sixteen days ago by the Sienans. We won, of course, but I wasn't even affected, I just kept on with my work, with my obses

Devious Journal Entry

Devious Journal Entry

Well after an extremely long hiatus I'm back. Don't worry, the work on the dragons will continue, but don't expect anything to be up until next week. That said, it's good to be back :)

Devious Journal Entry

Hello everyone- don't worry, the draconic wonder will continue. After I'm done my last two essays, I'll be writing a novel in the vein of Robert Bakker's "Raptor Red", except to do with prehistoric dragons. Things have been quiet with the Opus Sientia, just paperwork and such, but I will be writing a story about my first mission sometime soon.

Well, as you can probably guess- I wasn't kidnapped by Neoraptors; however, I did get a severe scolding and threatened mind wipe from the Opus Sientia. However, they deemed that I was too young to have such a large mind wipe without brain damage. So, I'm now an extremely young member of a really old organization. Haven't gotten completely through training yet- but once I do, they'll give me clearance to tell you guys what's what in the world of Supposedly Fictional Biology. My first assignment will be in British Columbia. Why? Who knows.
