I was one of the backers of the Elite: Dangerous crowdfunding campaign several years back. Sadly, I've yet to actually install and play the thing - in part, because I've got lots of other (mostly rewarding) stuff taking up my time. :P

I have been watching scott manley play it and chat to the creator. I would say it has its good points. I still play X3 etc. I don't have the time to play the games I have tho.

i think the issue for me will be time. I cannot devote any significant time to playing games, let alone one that requires this level of involvement :(

I say that all the time and then end up buying massive RPG's like skyrim and fallout anyway.

skyrim and fallout are not games!!! they're essential to living, like fruit and vegetables, or oxygen.

put it this way, i WILL be buying fallout4.

I played Wasteland2 through the other day. Worth playing if you liked the original fallouts.

Everyone is going bat-shit with the hype. It really does look great tho.

I've seen a lets play of wasteland2 and thought about it.

yeah worth checking it out. Good story, gameplay mechanics are rewarding. Very old school, but it kinda revels in that :)

The other game I'm liking is Planetside2. I loved the first game and put many many hours into it on PC. Now I'm playing it on PS4 and as a free to play game it's pretty decent. I find the controller a barrier for FPS though. I'm used to mouse and KB.

i think what you've done there is give this decision the perspective it needs, ie, go outside more :D

It really depends on what you expecting. The pro side is the huge wideness of space, and if you are into astronomy it really has its moments. The graphics are fine, but only can be really seen in stations and on other ships. The audio is incredible.
But, the downside is the grind of the game. Trading is the fastest way to earn money to get a ship for another field, like Exploration. But you just do the same over and over again, like a truck simulator. It can be fine, but I really would prefer the game to be a bit more progressive and with a more in-depth gameplay.
It is a bit cheaper on Steam at the moment. But I recommend getting X3 Terran Conflict or Albion Prelude instead. Elite is a great simulation game, it definitly is, but that's its problem too.

good points, I really wanted it to have SOME sort of story ark or progression, even if thats only a small part of it. There scope in the game for HUGE aspects of content driven stories, curated or player sourced. The original game did have a loose story. I was hoping the Power Play aspect (with the factions) was going to give it some depth.

Thing is, I could really see me loving the game in the short term. Just the longer term I can see boredom. I'd love to experience the game - its so pretty - but jsut not for the full cost.

It is fun in the beginning, when you don't know much about it, but after a while it gets repetitive pretty fast. I am playing it on and of, but didn't see a story or arc so far.
There is a demo of it, where you can try some scenarios, maybe this gives you more information.
The review of the Escapist on YouTube also summarizes it pretty good: www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLzW0d…

After you get over how awesome it is to fly the ships, you do get over it, its a pretty tedious game that doesn't reward very well on any scale really. The MMO aspect only serves to detract from what could have been a much more epic single player game

that's what worries me and why I havent just got it already. It looks amazing, the videos I've watched of it look great, but the gameplay looks worryingly shallow. If it was less than £20 to buy, I'd probably get it. But at £40 it's kinda OUCH. Also the grind/time aspect of it kinda bugs me. It's definitely not a "pick up and play" game.

No it really isn't. I've been playing Elite since the ZX48K days and Final Frontiers is still the best of the lot IMHO. E: D does a lot of things right but it does way to many wrong. You can get yourself into a cobra fairly easily and even get it kitted out with some decent stuff after a while but to get to the big ships takes a whole ton of effort and grind that isn't a lot of fun after a short while. And not ot mention they're so expensive to run and to buy that it's hardly worth buying them in the first place.

Off the top of my head a Cobra is around 300K where an Anaconda is 176 million and its not the biggest hitter either. Even as ASP is 6 mil with a rebuy cost in the late 100k's if you kit it out. And anytime someone finds a decent money maker in the game they nerf it in weeks, before most people can get a chance to earn serious creds. I find it a frustrating experience myself, being stuck down in the low ranks and not really having any other options than a cobra because I'm quite time poor and don't want to waste that time grinding for the bigger ship.

In terms of pick up and play you're not wrong. There's a steep learning curve in terms of the docking mechanic, general flight is ok but trading can be a bit overwhelming till you get a handle on it.

(Disclaimer I'm a backer and have been playing since Beta, not that I can bring myself to play these days :( )

It would definitely be worth £10 maybe £15 in my eyes because before it becomes a grind it is pretty cool, but it is an experience that becomes repetitive in the extreme even though it's really awesome if that makes sense.

Maybe wait a couple years, what the game needs is waaaaay more content, more low level ships and easier access the higher ships or ways of funding/maintaining them.

In the meantime Witcher 3 is damned enjoyable lol and if you want to scratch the spaceship itch there's always homeworld remastered and starpoint gemini 2 :)
