Wedding Dress: Mulan by ZheVickmeister Wedding Dress: Mulan by ZheVickmeister

tumblr reblog:

i'm still in love with anything wedding related.
and to satisfy this obsession, I had an idea to draw each of the 10 disney princesses in a wedding dress thats historically accurate (or culturally) fuzed with the official gown that Disney created for them.

this was inspired by :iconshoomlah:'s historically accurate disney princess series… and the official disney princess inspired wedding dresses by Alfred Angelo

It feels like i've been working on this forever! And it kinda was. Started the drawing in September 2014. Didn't finish until Feb. 2015.
her official disney gown (technically she has 3 dresses if u include the matchmaker one):………

Most of the historical aspects I got from Shoomlah. But since I am of Chinese descent, this stuff should be second nature to me. But the movie "Mulan" is all over the place in terms of historical accuracy. It captured the essence of China but not the right time periods.

Here's a list of stuff I had to dig through to determine the direction I went in.
- Tang dynasty based on Shang's wedding hat
- Wei, Jin dynasty clothes
- Tang dynasty hair
- Armor based on Qin/Tang/Song dynasty
- styles and customs vary depending on time period and province and individual family culture.
- Zhao Wei's "Mulan" based in 450 AD Sui Dynasty (matched w/ Disney's emperor)
- "oh disney, disney, disney.....u got stuff all over the place! i'm sooo tempted to fix Shang's outfit too @__@"
- Settled with Tang cuz it was most similar to movie canons. Concept art showed Tang
- yes Chinese do use veil, mostly in Qing to modern day
- Chinese traditionally marry in red. Red is a lucky color.
- Mulan has three wedding dresses, neither were legitly close to historically accurate.

What I decided on:
- Tang dynasty style.
Since Mulan is marrying Shang, and Shang is a general, of course her clothes had to be elaborate due to Shang's high status. Also, even if Mulan did not cut her hair, she still would've had to wear a wig (hair extensions) to add volume to the elaborate hair they had back then.
I kept her usual fallen piece of hair, made her makeup more appropriate to the Tang dynasty, while keeping true to the movie version. Kept her grandmother's accessories given in the movie.  Lot's of flower motifs in reference to her namesake.

Textures used:

Hope you all enjoy this series.

Wow! It's amazing!
If she married the prince that she offered herself to do before Mushu intervened, how much would be different in this outfit? c8

Hey, I was wondering how you found your references?  Whenever I try to look up Chinese fashion I never seem to come up with anything specific. :/
ZheVickmeister Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2015  Student General Artist
honestly its a lot of what feels like endless google searches. I do a mixture of searches depending what i started searching with to what i end up finding.

It's never just "chinese fashion" because thats more of modern fashion that people in China wear today.
For more traditional or ancient looks, i usually look up Chinese period dramas and movies and go from there. If lets say the drama was based in the Tang dynasty, I'd then look up "tang dynasty fashion"  "tang dynasty clothes" and so on. The older the dynasty, the harder it is to find something about it. Qing dynasty (the last one before modern day) is the easiest because there's photographic proof of how certain things look.

Sometimes u might need to change your search terminology when u find out how something is named. For example, the clothing pre-Qing dynasty is called "hanfu" or clothing of the han. So with that, u can easily search hanfu and look at the stuff there. Oftentimes I just look up any research other people have done and see what they think. In the case of this project, I used a lot of info from Shoomlah and Lilsuika, both on deviantart.

I hope this helps.

Ah, ok, that is what I am finding too, lol.  I happened upon a Dover book of Chinese fashions with some good drawings for some of the later periods, and I've been checking out Lilsuika too.  But you are right, it is harder to find images the further back you need to look!
