Bad Reality, Good Fantasy

By zharth
(With a nod to Maggie McNeill, The Honest Courtesan, for introducing me to the juxtaposition of good fantasies and bad realities).

I can't explain the psychology behind it, but it seems to be one of those curious things about human sexuality, that people can sometimes be turned on by some pretty twisted things.

And while this could conceivably lead the disreputable sort of person to engage in some pretty concerning, antisocial behaviors, the fact is that anyone with an unimpaired conscience is capable of understanding that just because the thought of something might get you sexually excited, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea to actually go out and do it.

In fact, it's even possible for the pure concept to be a turn on, while the actual reality remains a considerable turn off. For example, in the realm of fantasy, I think the abuse of power dynamics can be exciting in a twisted kind of way. But when stuff like that happens in real life, it doesn't turn me on - it just makes me angry!

That's because thoughts are not the same thing as actions, and the imagination is capable of conjuring realities where the usual laws (and repercussions) of our world simply do not apply. It's a form of escapism.

And if you're someone who believes in the fundamental importance of the freedom of speech, then it is imperative that people be allowed to fantasize about whatever gets them hot and bothered - whether it offends you or not - while continuing to be judged by their actions and the content of their character, rather than their thoughts and the contents of their sexual fantasies.
