A quick sketch done in 2017 and polished up with more ink and digital tonight.  It's a jazz upright bassist, stylized expressionistically to the point of near total abstraction.
jaz coleman II
my second spin at rendering Kiling Joke frontman Jaz Coleman, in this case I drew the original linework with my non-dominant hand, then added paint normally later, finishes with digital later.  The reference images used were from the early 80s post punk period of the band, and the loose, messy, angry sound came out in the linework.

Deviantartist questionaire

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 9, 2015, 1:14 PM

  1. How long have you been on DeviantArt?
    nearly 14 years.

  2. What does your username mean?
It is technically the name of old Roman Catholic apocrypha: zeruch was an angel, whose name roughly translates to "right arm of God, set over strength" but it also begins with "Zé", which is the shortening of my name José (Joseph) in my natal Portuguese.

  3. Describe yourself in three words.
    mercurial, monachopsic, chameleonic

  4. Are you left or right handed?
right hand dominant, but somewhat ambidextrous

  5. What was your first deviation?
mixed media, just like most everything else

  6. What is your favourite type of art to create?

  7. If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?
    The art of diplomacy

  8. What was your first favourite?  Alas by mesh77

  9. What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?
My tastes are all over the span. My favs reflect that.

  10. Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?
There have been a few: digifox , alchemismukitakumukipaulmaybury and Paula-Rosa come to mind.

  11. If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?

  12. How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?
I've made a few lasting friendships. That's kinda cool, yo. I was a Gallery Director so I have a few folks like Moonbeam13 and King-Mob to thank for that.  That said, I was one for so long that apparently the rumor is that now GD volunteers can only go a year because guys like me wore down the management :bucktooth:

  13. What are your preferred tools to create art?
    Here's a mindmap:…

  14. What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?
My studio(s) over the years: The Mezzannine, the Ziggurat, and now the Aerie.

  15. What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?
Too many to list, most of them involved meeting in person the people I met online.  I met digifox in Calgary, Paula-Rosa in Lisbon, laurel in SF , King-Mob in LA...etc.

I do recommend that everyone get
familiar with the FAQ/Helpdesk

There is also the DA Status Forum (always informative), and the Etiquette Policy is something you should all refer to, because I do tend to lurk about in several of the public forums.

I have been described as an open source geek, a policy wonk, and even a bit of a creative illustrator (the latter being what folks here are most likely familiar with). All are at least partially true I suppose. I've been called all manner of adjectives, most of them contrarian. I was described once as a cross between Tucker Carlson and Lenny Kravitz. I have neither bow ties nor dreadlocks, but the description sounded incredibly cool, so I figured it was worth mentioning here.

I initially studied an individual major in Foreign Affairs and Technology Policy at UC Davis (with a language component at UC Berkeley), and am now starting to take coursework in Civil Litigation. I currently work in a few venues: a networking startup in Silicon Valley and do consulting to a corporate attorney in private practice, as well as occasional projects that meet my requirements for being interesting (which is a pretty broad category of potential). As one can derive from all of this, I do not do idle well, and I am not prone to boredom.

Here at DA I worked the HD for a year before moving to one of the Gallery Director slots for Traditional, until I sent myself out into the sunset in May of 2008. My own focus is on mixed media and looking for people who have yet to establish themselves. I periodically write content features, and regularly contribute to several of the forums.
