This is gonna sound weird but... ^^; Ouran High School Host Club art design was off-putting to me. They just looked so angular and skinny; almost anorexic to me. Haruhi made reading the manga worth it though ;P I love that little anti-hero (anti-heroine?)
Invader Zim was pretty off-putting too :P but that's what I loved about it as a kid; how everything was so mildly disturbing. Of course, that's also why my mom banned me from watching it after she watched 5 minutes of an episode with me

I haven't watched Host Club, but I know it enough to understand that those long limbs skinny tall characters wouldn't appeal to me as well :P (Speaking of long limbs skinny tall characters, I wanted to take a look at the xxxHOLiC anime since I've quite liked the manga, but then I stumbled upon some screenshots that were so bad I changed idea D: )

At first the design for steven universe was really off putting for me, i didnt watch until the end if the third season because of this, i thought that because the art style was so chibi it would be like teen titans go(fart jokes and bleh) but i was wrong after watching i realized the style grew on me as the story enticed me

Yeah, I still haven't watch it properly (just some episodes passing on the local tv... when I remember to turn it on), but I spent months asking myself "why people are so obsessed with this show?" (actually "why there are so many fanarts of this?" xD) before trying to get to know more about it lazyness is an ugly beast

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has one of the most off-putting art styles i've ever encountered >.> it's really ugly. i'm not a fan of beefy technicolor men and that's basically the entire cast lmao. it was still a fairly good story and i did end up liking it enough to watch 3 seasons of it on crunchyroll :{

Twin Star Exorcists also has some really ugly character designs, but the rest of the show makes up for it (idk man this author can't fucking design good female characters for some reason? they're all terrible lmao)

Ikr? The first impact is traumatic, until you realize that the character design isn't the only thing that's over-the-top xP ("beefy technicolor men", I love this xD)

I hated the art style of Rick and Morty and BoJack Horseman so much when I started watching it, but people said they were so good so I swallowed that distaste. Turns out that R&M's art style is actually pretty cool and has amazing character designs, and they're both good shows!

I keep on hearing how good these shows are, I just must take a look now :P
(bojack horseman's style is really off-putting though D: )

Definitely! Don't set up your expectations too high though; if you do there's a chance it won't live up to the hype. It's best to go in neutral and see how much you like it <:

Oh, absolutely, it's terrible. The key is going in and getting used to it along the way, and focusing on small visually cool details like Mr Peanutbutter (the dog)'s teeth and some of the poses and expressions. Once you can look past it, you should get used to it!

I loved reading an online comic called "dominic-deegan" Oracle for hire, great characters with a complex consistent world, It´s smart, funny and clever even if the art isn´t the best (specially on the begining, but I´m glad I kept reading, it was great

Also 8-bit theatre, I mean it was a pixel art comic and that can get tiresome FAST but wow is that a funny clever non cliched comic

I'd say Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji again. When I stumbled across this series I was shocked and I thought the art style is ugly as hell xd But I was intrigued by it at the same time. While watching this series I not only got used to the art style, but also grew loving it - it's the most expressive one I have ever seen up to now. And, as someone have mentioned before, I'd also say - Ping Pong The Animation. The art style of this series put me off at first, but it suits for the series and has its own charm, plus character development was really well done (and it's just 11 episodes). I didn't know who to root for, since all of them were lovable xd

The fact that Ping Pong The Animations has been mentioned twice already makes me think... :hmm:

It's definitely worth watching  If somebody thinks it's impossible to show good, dynamic characters in a short story, they should watch Ping Pong The Animation then :D

Yes, it happened with some BL webcomics. The characters of "Autophobia" at first looked ugly to me, now I love them!! Even the art of "Starfighter" and "Always raining here" was still acerb at the beginning, but then they became beautiful and the story was so interesting! Now they are between my faves.
And the art of the manhwa "Never Understand / Out of control" looked weird at first. But it was adorable.
And for what concerns cartoons... Spongebob XD I hated it, they were sooo ugly! But then I found him so cute, haha!!

I know the feeling, you think "ew, I don't like the style so much but let's just read some pages out of curiosity". Then you're hooked xD

you just made me realize how much indulgent I am when it comes to BL comics character design xD

Madoka Magica, the classic "I'm not what you expect me to be" :P (I will never forget Kyubey's creepy blank stare D: )
Ah, the (in)famous Clannad...

Ping Pong The Animation looks quite off-putting but it's a well-written story about more than just bouncing little balls xD

For me, the most relevant one is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I watched it after ignoring it for years and now I LOVE it, it's... too epic for words.  The character design (or more like, the outfits), especially in the beginning, made my eyesockets bleed profusely I just wanted Vanilla Ice to wear some pants *cries*, and the palette sometimes is seizure inducing, but I got so engrossed in the story I stopped noticing that after a while.

When I started watching "Haikyuu!!" at first I didn't like the characters very much. Now I love all of them

The only thing that disturbed me about Haikyuu!!'s character design at first were the noses! xD They're so tiny! I mean, in other character designs the nose is just a point and it's fine, the most important thing is that it works well with all the rest - sometimes things works even without it! - but for some reason it disturbed me so much?? It take a lot to get used to it xD
useless to say I don't even notice the thing anymore :P
