Description

Despite what some misguided Disney execs may try to tell you- Jumba will ALWAYS be a part of the Pelekai Ohana!

EDIT: Wow okay thanks for the hype badge- so uh this is the most popular thing I've ever posted.

Some side notes from me- yes I'm moderating comments to a degree. I tend to do that if I think certain things are getting out of hand but I've never had a comment section quite as active as this one.

No I have not and will not be seeing the live action movie. No I'm not going to wait for them to 'rectify' their mistakes in the sequel simply because I don't think they're going to. I don't want there to be a sequel at all. This remake has been a slap in the face for me and many other people not only as fans of the original movie and series, but to other indigenous people, and I do not have the time or energy to summarize why here but if you have some level of media literacy and knowledge about what not only indigenous Hawaiians but the indigenous population at large in North America has been through and continues to go through, you should know why.

Everything about this new movie was a mistake and an accidental demonstration that at this point Disney cares much more about making money than making art.

Also no. I do not think this movie is the way it is because of "political correctness" that is one bonkers take I've had to remove a couple times from these comments. I don't know what's politically correct about taking away Pleakley's queerness or having an indigenous woman give up custody of her sister to go to school on the mainland when she could attend the same if not better program for free in Hawaii itself.

The difference in direction in this movie from the 2002 one can be accounted to one very simple thing: Disney owns resorts in Hawaii now, so they're sure as hell not going to be critical of the tourist industry there and how it negatively impacts the indigenous population (who are literally begging people at this point to stop touring there so they can afford to live on their own native land) and they sure as hell aren't going to have a heavy handed criticism of authority corrupting with a character like Gantu.

That's all!

yes it is insulting because he was such a major character and he played such a big role in the end having a huge character Journey himself.
