After the Battle by Zephyri After the Battle by Zephyri
After the battle, I sit. After the battle, when the coloured standards hold no more promise of victory. Broken and torn, they proclaim nothing more glorious than the bodies of the dead that lay stained with the sepia earth around them. Bodies that were once men and women who followed them nobly to slaughter.

For what is there left, when even the last mournful voices have faded, claimed by the cold embrace of silence? When those I have loved and cared for are gone and my very purpose for being is thwarted by the swords and bloodied cries of men whose lives I have tried to save? What thoughts are to be had when even the healer sits bleeding of a mortal wound, with no hand left to help she who tried so vainly to stand against the onslaught of war?

Yet even after the battle, the clouds strafe away, the blood sinks into the dirt, and life slowly creeps back.

Even after the battle, there is hope.

______________________________

A commission for one of the most generous people I've ever had the good fortune to come into contact with, this piece was no means easy, and fought me a lot during the first attempt in oils. The only time I've ever admitted defeat with a medium, the coloured pencil version was more successful, and the amount of work gone into this piece reflects the huge amount of respect I have for the commissioner and the amount I really felt for the character. This is Deluna, a healer, left dying on the battle field with none left to help her.

As mentioned, coloured pencil on grey card, done a little bigger than my usual A4 pieces, with a lot of time and love spent on the detailing, so full view is muchly appreciated. My best pencil piece to date, I think. And it couldn't have gone to a more deserving person. Many thanks, Kim, I'm so happy you stumbled across my artwork one day so long ago.

oh this is so, so stunning! I really have no words for this. I always love these kind of full scenes that are drawn and I admire your colour pencil work on this. Everything fits perfect. I love this. <3 How did you blend the colours so well?

This is one I can't :+fav: without saying anything - I have a lot of respect for you and for the quality of the piece. The level of detail is fantastic and it's one of the few pieces I've ever seen on dA that I'd seriously consider buying. Perhaps once I have the funds and am able to decide on a finish, I'll have to go through with it.

Thank you for putting your time and effort into making such an awesome piece of work!

Hi, many thanks for asking, but as this was a private commissions of someone elses character, I'd ask that you don't use it in your publication. Many thanks, :)

It would be hard to say how many. I am guessing only a couple of dozen would be sold. For sure under 100. But if you don't want me to use it with a copyright notice and a pointer to your deviant art site, I will not. It would possibly be good exposure for you, and my thoughts were that it would be a win/win for all parties. Based upon your response however, I will find another image to use.

A beautiful picture... it evokes so many emotions, and thoughts about war. The dead soldiers all seem to be resting so peacefully... but you know they each had to die a very violent and bloody death in order to be at peace. What was it all for?

Very much the kind of emotions I wanted to get across.. and to have a healer, who has to deal with it all in the middle. Thank you for the kind words!

Impressive! As others have said, beautiful attention to detail. I'd love to hear more about the work process, and what references you used (if any). Parts of their armour look a bit roman to me, but I might be overanalyzing. I'm not really familiar with grey card either. Did you create the smoke in the background by leaving out space or is that coloured as well?

I'll have to stop myself before this turns into a rant, but one final thing... I'm kind of bummed that you didn't show Deluna's hands in the closeup, because they are really well done. Definitely my favorite part of the picture, and the bright red strip of cloth she's holding makes them feel very central. Caught my eye right away.

Anyway, your dedication really shows. I'll be watching you.

Thank you for such an in depth comment! There were a bunch of references used for this, mostly stock images from dA, as it's such a great resource! Certainly the main three figures were referenced, though none of them were wearing armor - most of that is half imagined half-referenced, in so much as I probably looked as a bunch of armor and then went about creating my own versions - hence the reason there's a little roman-esque skirting among the mostly full plate and chain mail. I suspect I came at it more from a fantastical than historical point of view, so forgive me for any major historical blunders with the armor! And glad you like the hands, surprised I didn't include them in the closeups too... maybe they caused me enough trouble that I didn't include them as punishment :) Really appreciate the time you took to comment, thank you!

Hey there! unfortunately this is one of the few images in my gallery I don't allow people to repurpose, even without changing, as it was a private commission of someone's character, and as such I'm not comfortable with others using it. I really do appreciate you asking though. If there are any other images you'd like to use in my gallery, please note me :)

Every now and then you stumble onto a piece of art which reminds you that digital doesn't necessarily have to be better. I'm sure you could produce an impressive version on photoshop as well, but I doubt it would speak to me like this one does. I hate to repeat what others have said, but this is hands down one of the most impressive works of art I've seen =)

Thank you very much! I've seen digital pieces that elicit the same kind of response, but there is definitely something about traditional that feels more visceral somehow, not sure why. Either way, I'm glad you like the piece.

This is absolutely amazing, especially for colored pencil work. It's just so profoundly sad... there's just such a sense of loss and tragedy to this picture. I know it's old, but still, it's impressive.
