A painting of young Phèdre nó Delaunay of the Kushiel Legacy Trilogy by writer Jacqueline Carey. This would be about halfway through the first book, before her life changed forever. I tried to capture a bit of a carefree, and slightly shallow, Phèdre. I plan on doing a portrait of her in Skaldia, as a companion piece to this.

Enjoy!

Phèdre belongs to Jacqueline Carey; I'm just a rabid fan ^^
Edit: Changed her eyes a bit to make her dart more apparent, did some more work to her hair and hand.

Sso captures the more shallow, carefree part of Phedre. Mastered beautifully!

Ooh very pretty!
Yes, this looks much more like a Phedre before Skaldia and before the death of the Delaunay household!
I like it

Lovely! Making me remember the beginning before she's kidnapped--have not read the first trilogy in a while. I love to hate Melisande too of course, with her diamond on a velvet lead... Great picture--look forward to Skaldia. I still remember the shivers I got when she was almost skinned!

Aww, thank you! Lots of practice, trust me! :D There are a lot of great tutorials out there, however, that I reccommend looking up if you are having trouble! *enayla's eye tutorial is especially great!

Ang already said thanks, but I'm really thrilled you uploaded this (as well as the other images) to Night's Doorstep. I saw this piece pop up a little while ago on Facebook and I loved how you caught a side of Phedre we rarely get to see. Her carefree, slightly indulgent expression really captures the contented vanity we find in her character in those early days, and I also quite like that you showed her from the front rather than worrying about her marque.

The dart is well handled as well, very noticeable (even in the thumbnail version) but not something overt and out of place. A really great rendition of that ';petal on dark waters' description.

I would really love to see a companion piece to this later on, showing how much she's grown and changed, particularly after confronting Melisande.

Lovely work. I look forward to seeing more!

Thank you for joining #Nights-Doorstep and thank you also for uploading our first submissions! Your fan art for the Kushiel series is some of the best I've seen. I adore how you've captured that sense of carefree Phedre with her innocent smile. The details and the colors in this are all quite stunning and are quite fitting for the lavish lifestyle she led at Delaunay's estate.

It's funny I've heard of so many versions of the mote in her eye, but I like this version best where it is more of a small spot of crimson rather than something in the white of her eye (as I've heard others interpret it).

I'd randomly love to see someone tackle an image of Phedre even younger, when she was a poor uncertain child being sold into slavery. It's a face we don't get to see of her too often. It will be interesting to see how you tackle an older version as well (as you mentioned to a previous commenter)

Lovely work! I hope to see more from you:)

Thank you so much, I'm honored I could be the first! There are so many great Kushiel fanartists out there, this will be a club with a lot of amazing art very soon, I'm sure!

I've always envisioned her mote like that. I've seen a lot of renditions, and have even caught flack for mine, but I've always thought it was more akin to heterochromia, rather than something in the whites of her eye. Maybe I'm wrong, but the awesome thing about doing fanart from books is that you get to interpret how you like! :D

I agree! I think I also associate Phedre's mark as heterochromia because the friend who introduced me to the series also had such a condition and enjoyed the parallels between herself and Phedre. My friend has such pretty eyes too (hazel with a random circle of reddish brown). It's interesting to see in real life. It really does look like a mote of color on the surface.

Her hair came out stunning and her face is light and airy... I hope that makes sense! I like the beading too. Very nice detail!
