I'm amazed this actually worked.
So, in case anyone’s confused - I didn't make this from scratch – it’s actually a shot from Disney's Moana which I simply modified in Photoshop.
After seeing the gorgeously rendered ocean spirit from Moana, I started thinking about how cool a 3D animated Avatar TLA movie would be - getting to see all the bending elements with those delicious particle effects and such (though I still love the original 2D style, of course). But I wanted to try something more than static character illustrations (like I did for Final Fandisney) - so looked for a shot featuring the ocean spirit and Moana, naively planning to just paint over her with Katara's outfit in Photoshop, frame by frame. Which is exactly what I did, not realizing how much work it would be to repaint each outfit detail as it changed angle. But thankfully, not only does this shot have all the relevant elements, it also doesn't show anything changing angle (mostly). Which meant I managed to get away with just painting each costume detail once and then warping it. Any other shot would've been so much more complicated and wouldn't have looked nearly as convincing. So yeah, things just worked out.
When it came to design, it seemed appropriate (and lots of fun) to embellish Katara's outfit details to match Disney's stylized realism. Overall that just meant adding some extra stitching and decorations, but the oar is where I got to be most creative. Obviously Katara doesn't carry a weapon, but Sokka does. So I based it on his club which has that iconic blue sphere and detailed it with patterns inspired by Maori bone carvings, which seemed to fit Moana and Katara's islander culture.
And as a final touch, I added some background icebergs so you know you're near a Waterbender tribe. ;D
There are still some minor glitches between frames, but I’m plenty pleased with how it turned out.
Aw, thank you very much! Yeah, as much as I love the handcrafted look of 2D animation, it's so exciting to see how tangible everything seems in 3D. I basically made this just to go, "whoa, there she is" haha
For all we know in this scenario, Moana’s father could be from the water tribe while her mother was earth kingdom!
Hey, could be! It makes me think, imagine if those bender parents had a kid who could bend both elements - like if Mako was an only child and could bend both Fire and Earth - like a half-Avatar.
Thanks very much! Funnily enough, editing images is actually really similar to painting something from scratch. So if you're good at one, you're basically good at both. ;D
But yeah, I like to play with all kinds of styles, so generally don't find myself on sites dedicated something specific like Sakugabooru.
