The Witch and the Brush Pen

:iconphoq: bought me a brush pen recently and this is the first thing I inked with it. It's been a while since I inked with anything other than photoshop, because mistakes are easier to erase digitally and also because I didn't especially like any of the traditional inking methods. This might all change with that new pen! :D

The character is Marine, before she got her stylish haircut and purple hands.

I'm very fond of this project and the character, but I fear people will compare it with Avatar (the last air bender) because there are a few similarities, especially with the new main character they just announced :(

This witch of yours looks like such a badass. I would like to know more about her, now- her blue eyes are just so freaking cool! X3

Thanks! I have a lot more of her in my gallery and I told her origin story in the last 2 inktobers (which I posted here as well)

I can dig the colors and use of texture/brush-ness. Very nice...

Very cool. Something about the style reminds of Mignola.

Hey don't sweat Avatar, dude. I think as long as your story, themes and characters are different enough it shouldn't matter. Just because people are using elements shouldn't draw readers away from your story. I mean sure some morons might yell about it, but who gives a crap?

Besides, I'd say the web comic "The Meek" borrows from Avatar, even style wise, and it's doing pretty damn well.

It's more about the fact that I don't want to do something that has already been done. But I don't think it's a show stopper anymore. I will have to make the differences clearer early on in the story :)

I adore the primal feel to it. I can't wait to see this webcomic in action, if it isn't already!

Brush pens are awesome!! I love mine and have been using it for years. What kind is it?

Yes they are :D
It's a pentel pocket brush. I have seen many people using it, is it the one you are using as well?

Yes, actually! It's an amazing brush-- I've tried others but none of them seem to work as well (usually cuz they have those weird squishy felt things instead of real bristles).

At the end of the day, anything you create will be compared to someone else's work, simply because there's so much material out there. And chances are you'll have never even heard of whatever it is you're being compared to! Anyone who has been following your work will be familiar with your Marine project, and I'm sure most of them wouldn't hesitate to stick up for you, if it came to that. ;)

Brush-pens rule. Even the cheap ones are really nice to work with. And much as I love your digital stuff, they do add an organic quality that one tends to lose with digital work. Can't wait to see more of your brush-pen stuff! :)

More brush pen stuff to come soon :)
It's fun to get away from the screens sometime.

Don't worry so much about it. You've been working on this long eforeKorra was anounced and Marine seems very unique.

I think the story of Marine will show quite a different story than Avatar; after all, it's usually not so much "the abilities" of the individual, but rather how it influences the character and how they choose to wield said abilities. Right?

Anyhow, I love the style in this one! Very dark, almost sinister, Marine.
