The Witch and the Brush Pen by zazB The Witch and the Brush Pen by zazB
:iconphoq: bought me a brush pen recently and this is the first thing I inked with it. It's been a while since I inked with anything other than photoshop, because mistakes are easier to erase digitally and also because I didn't especially like any of the traditional inking methods. This might all change with that new pen! :D

The character is Marine, before she got her stylish haircut and purple hands.

I'm very fond of this project and the character, but I fear people will compare it with Avatar (the last air bender) because there are a few similarities, especially with the new main character they just announced :(

Thanks! I have a lot more of her in my gallery and I told her origin story in the last 2 inktobers (which I posted here as well)

Hey don't sweat Avatar, dude. I think as long as your story, themes and characters are different enough it shouldn't matter. Just because people are using elements shouldn't draw readers away from your story. I mean sure some morons might yell about it, but who gives a crap?

Besides, I'd say the web comic "The Meek" borrows from Avatar, even style wise, and it's doing pretty damn well.

It's more about the fact that I don't want to do something that has already been done. But I don't think it's a show stopper anymore. I will have to make the differences clearer early on in the story :)

Yes they are :D
It's a pentel pocket brush. I have seen many people using it, is it the one you are using as well?

Yes, actually! It's an amazing brush-- I've tried others but none of them seem to work as well (usually cuz they have those weird squishy felt things instead of real bristles).

At the end of the day, anything you create will be compared to someone else's work, simply because there's so much material out there. And chances are you'll have never even heard of whatever it is you're being compared to! Anyone who has been following your work will be familiar with your Marine project, and I'm sure most of them wouldn't hesitate to stick up for you, if it came to that. ;)

Brush-pens rule. Even the cheap ones are really nice to work with. And much as I love your digital stuff, they do add an organic quality that one tends to lose with digital work. Can't wait to see more of your brush-pen stuff! :)

I think the story of Marine will show quite a different story than Avatar; after all, it's usually not so much "the abilities" of the individual, but rather how it influences the character and how they choose to wield said abilities. Right?

Anyhow, I love the style in this one! Very dark, almost sinister, Marine.

You are right about that. If her personality and goals differ a lot from things we usually see, she could stand out, even if we already saw characters and super heroes manipulate water, as she does.

I can see some superficial comparisons to Avatar but I think once you start the story itself the differences will become quite clear. Didn't you say that Marine is nearly one of a kind in her world? In Avatar, there are lots of benders which I think would lend a very different tone to the story. As long as you don't give Marine three friends with powers in the other elements you should be alright :)

She is one of a kind as you said. In the beginning she was supposed to have brothers and sisters who would BE the other elements, and you would hear about them but I didn't think about showing them. Now I'm wondering if I'm just going to cut them from the story. I think you can find them on one drawing I did a while ago :)

I've decided to throw my vote behind the Space Viking story. Your designs there seem to have more depth, especially the costumes. Also you seem to have a more consistent style pinned down for it, and me likes!

Haha, well at least your work draws comparison from things like Avatar the Last Airbender and Atlantis. Most people have found memories of those two works. There are worse things your project could be compared to.

I really like the style of this one! Marine looks very ominous.

This is so beautiful. It reminds me of Mike Mignola's lines, which are so sharp and gorgeous. I really should go back to some more traditional mediums. Thanks for the inspiration! Mind if I ask what the pen is? It's great and I'd love to get a good recommendation.

Nah, don't bother with people who mortify your creativity by comparing your artwork with other things they have seen. That happens to me as well, from time to time, but I've grown accustomed to ignoring such useless remarks.
