I rendered on 64bit Ubuntu 15.10.  However, I did not use my GPU for the render.  I used my CPU, which is an AMD FX-8350, a 4.0ghz octa-core which actually renders slightly faster than my GPU (a factory-overclocked GeForce GTX 650 Ti)

thanks 4 answer, do U think that blender is faster on Linux than on Win?

Yeah, it is slightly faster (10-20%) when rendering with a CPU.  This is due to GCC producing more optimized code than MSVC.  Though, according to one of the blender developers, the 2015 version of MSVC closes the gap to about 5%.

When rendering with a GPU, there is no notable difference in rendering speed.

I was using the Adaptive Sampling patch.  What it does is every X samples, it scans a tile to see how noise-free it is, and once the noise is below a certain threshold, it stops rendering that tile early and moves on to the next one.  This way, the tiles that don't need many samples get fewer samples, while the noisier samples get more.  And the sample count, instead of being the total samples, instead becomes the maximum amount of allowed samples.
