Personal Information
Nature: Timid
Characteristic: Quick to flee
Overview: Shy and often nervous, Gary’s not exactly the most open and sociable person. He’s rather awkward and fidgety, especially around new people or people who scare him(like Graham). But he’s a good guy at heart, and is highly intelligent.
In Conversation: Stutters a lot around those he’s unfamiliar with, or who he is afraid of, but after he gets used to someone it will lessen. Even around his closest friends, however, it never completely goes away.
At a Glance: Easy to startle, very shy and quiet, somewhat of a bookworm.
Closer Bond: A really smart guy, fun to talk to once you get past the stuttering. Once you’re close, he’s actually quite friendly.
Likes: Reading, learning, science, history, old stories, friends and (some)family.
Dislikes: Bullies, large crowds, Horace’s attempts at cooking, running out of books to read.
Fears: Large crowds, tight spaces, the dark, ghosts, being alone(figuratively), Kricketots.
Goals: Trying to better himself as a person by learning as much as he can and making new friends.
Combat Information
Battle Style: Usually takes a backseat in fights when he can. Watching and analyzing the enemy to find patterns, providing ranged support with Thunderbolt, sensing hidden enemies and watching for surprise attacks are all roles he tries to play while Horace takes the stage. However, he’s willing to get involved in a fight to protect those dear to him.
Prowess: Avoids violence whenever possible, partially due to his kind nature and partially because he is not physically strong. Will try to reason out problems before coming to blows, but will fight if no other options are left and he feels it’s justified.
Strengths: Very intelligent, has studied tactics and teachings of several well-known fighters. Plays a supporting role very well.
Weaknesses: Easily scared, not very strong or fast. His lack of confidence makes him doubt himself often.
Ability: Unaware - Gary is not affected by an opponent’s stat changes. By focusing his mind on anything but the battle, he can completely ignore any stat boosts his opponent has taken upon themself. The downside being, of course, that he can’t pay much attention to an ongoing battle for this to work and thus creates an opening for an opponent if they realize it.
Move Set
· Move 1: Thunderbolt - Gary’s primary attack. By charging static from his fur, Gary can fire of bolts of electricity at opponents. On its own it is rather weak, closer to a Thundershock used by an Electric type, but by using his hat to absorb and focus the built-up static, he can unleash some powerful blasts.
· Move 2: Odor Sleuth - Channeling energy into his nose, Gary can make it more sensitive, picking up scents he wouldn’t normally use. Useful for finding hidden opponents, tracking down missing people, and searching for secret passages. Though making his nose more sensitive does make him more prone to sneezing.
· Move 3: Amnesia - Gary can temporarily dump some memories and information in order to free his mind to resist special attacks. After a short amount of time, the memories and information come back, and his boosts go away. The more he forgets, the higher his mental defenses become. However, things that leave a lasting impression on his brain cannot be forgotten.
· Move 4: Headbutt - Gary’s last resort. While he can use it for short bursts of speed, the effort leaves him winded, rendering that effect useless. But by sending himself barreling into an enemy, he can surprise them enough to cause them to flinch, giving him time to retreat a little or call for aid. Most enemies can block, dodge, or catch the attack, but most instinctively dodge it, allowing him at least a moment to plan an escape.
Stat Breakdown
Stamina: 5. Gary doesn’t tire too quickly, but extended periods of exertion can leave him pooped. He was worse before making his way to Tabira, but all of the walking he did helped him boost his endurance a bit.
Strength: 3. Gary’s not exactly strong. He’s not weak either, but he’s not breaking any records. Thanks to a peaceful disposition, he’s never taken up any kind of martial training, though every now and then Horace or Ray will drag him to the Trackers training fields and help him practice.
Agility: 4. Gary is not very quick or nimble. His lack of an exercise routine means that he’s generally not improving himself physically, though Horace is able to at least keep him from growing too complacent. Bidoof are not naturally speedy Pokemon, so Gary has never seen a reason to try to get faster.
Intelligence: 9. While not quite a genius, he’s pretty darn close to it. His love of knowledge has helped his mind grow over the years, and he’s always looking for more books to read and things to discover. Naturally curious, his timidness is the only thing that holds him back from being a truly great academic.
Charisma: 4. Gary stutters when he speaks, and is very uncomfortable talking around people he doesn’t know. It gets even worse when he’s on his own, but if Horace or another friend is there he’s usually a bit more likely to come out of his shell.

History
As a child, Gary was bullied in school for one reason or another; he doesn’t really remember why the kids always teased him, or what for. But his brother pulled him out of school and taught Gary himself. Still, the bullying continued, to the point where Gary started becoming very reclusive. After Al told him about the Guilds of Tabira, he decided to join the Scholars to try to learn more, and become a better person. He met Horace along the way, and the two became fast friends. Since they arrived, Gary has been taking all sorts of jobs, trying to grow as a person and meet new people.

Additional Trivia
Gary was originally based on the Bidoof from Wigglytuff’s Guild in PMD. However, I ended up changing him(I can’t quite remember where I got the idea for that from).
In the first few drafts of the team, Gary didn’t have a stutter, and wasn’t very shy, he was an inventor. His stutter actually comes from my friend Steve, who has a similar nervous stutter, though his is compounded somewhat worse due to muscle defects in his lower jaw. From the stutter sprouted some shyness around others, and from there it spiralled out of control until the Gary we know today was born.
I can’t remember where I got the idea for Gary’s hat. Originally he didn’t even know Thunderbolt, and in the second draft he had a sort of headband that shot lightning out of it.
Every single one of Gary’s known ancestors in the last four generations or so knows an electric type move, even though almost all of them are Normal types.
Gary has a more extensive family history than I had intended, but it is actually quite important to his story.
