The "fire" is actually supposed to be a "lost soul" head, since he's been erased from both the timeline and everyone's memories. Zarla draws it more flame-y because it looks cooler.

And when he doesn't have a lost soul head, it's either because the comic is at a point in the story where he can still choose mercy, and thus remain linear and remembered, or because Zarla wants to draw the expressions on his face. If you go to her tumblr or her dreamwidth page, she usually says why his head is visible when it is.

I’m really curious about the timeline of things.  Also, what the physical ages of Sans and Papyrus are.  Gaster mentions that he accelerated their growth, does that mean that they are nearly adult size when they are out of the tubes?  With Sans, it seems difficult to say, since by the time he meets the human, he is roughly about the same size.  Papyrus doesn’t look fully grown, especially since he is still smaller than Gaster for all the time he is around him.  They also both look childlike still during the experiments.  I get the feeling that Gaster would not have been able to conduct this experiment for years, even though there is no real time stated, it seems that everything might have been more measured in months?  Just because of how much of a toll everything had been taking on Gaster, and from what little we see of the people around him, I can’t imagine it going on for too long.  Thus, by the time Sans and Papyrus are found by Asgore, they will only be maybe a year or two old?  Though physically older?   And how long do they spend with Asgore?  It seems like it can be as short as a few months, or as long as a few years.  Sans definitely seems to be more mature by the time they leave.  They also look a little older, but if their physical growth was accelerated, who knows how long the effects of the accelerating could be?  They could fully grow to maturity after only a year or two for all we know.

If you reread the comic when they move in their house, it's stated that it has been abandoned for a few months but definitely not years. Which means it's about the time they've lived with Asgore (a few months).

I really, really like this comic!
It is my most favorite UT-Comic so far!

But I came up with some questions (not only handplates but to all of your UT-work):
In your Version of the Universe, all skeleton can glow, and every color means something. But there are also "standart" glows for every skeleton. What would happen if the standart-glow for one is the same as happiness-green?
Are there "Male" and "Female" skeletons? Because Sans and Pap are Brothers? What if they would be sisters? (see it as a gender-swap universe?)
Do you think there once were human-skeleton hybrids? Like hundreds of years ago? Would they be Humans that could glow eyes? Would they have flesh on some parts of the body, but not on others? (sounds kind of creepy, I know)
Could there have been other types of skeletons in the past? Like not so "humanlike", instead some looked more like Asgore and Toriel or any of the others?

I think that are all of my questions so far...
You don't have to answer everything as soon as you can. I'm not logged in very often. (actually, you don't have to answer anything, I can't make you do anything anyway)
But I hope my question maybe gave you an idea for some doodle or so xD

Anyway, I really hope to read more soon!
Good luck and ... whatever you have to wirte at the end of something like this. I have no idea. (Am I a little bit possessed by Sans? xD ) Greetings from Austria (We don't have wild kangaroos)

I'm not the creator, and I'm probably wrong but I'll try to help answer your questions with what I've collected so far;
-All skeletons can glow. Each color shows emotion. Purple is fear, and green is happy. Those two I'm sure of. Red might be pain (from the hole-punch comic panels).
-I'm sure there are male and female skeletons, since in the Mercy-Plates AU Asgore asks if Gaster was "hiding someone from him". (As in a girl.)
-I'm pretty sure the skeleton race in the Mercyplates AU, for example are all quite-human like. I know 3 skeletons isn't much to go off of, but that's what I've gathered.

Hope I helped in understandin' more.
