But who could leave such a lovely place? And such a lovely face.

Sans, Papyrus, Temmie, Ragel (c) Undertale: this is self-indulgent but let me have this okay

It occurs to me that Paps should absolutely be friends with the Temmies...they're as outgoing and liable to slough off negativity as he is, so why wouldn't he count them?

You know, I didn't even connect them before reading this. Point to you! Clap

I think my favorite part is Papyrus relating the Skelebros to Temmie by way of shared unknown history, and Sans is like "..Huh. Point to you."

I already found Handplates a while back after my first bad Undertale fever. And now I read it the second time till this page again. I like your story and it's one of my faves so far! Keep up your work. :D

Go, have that indulgence, we indulge with you. It has that weird charm and Pap's optimistic reframing is gold in this.

I know this is long. But worth it.

In a way, Papyrus' passive superiority complex is Sans' fault, but somehow, it almost makes sense. Gaster often seemed to view skeletons as special and different than other races, and he was very rude towards those unrelated to the royal family, such as the mouse monster who worried about handrails. It seemed in that instance, Gaster was more worried about his pride as a scientist being questioned than the fact his designs could be made more safe for others. He put his pride over the safety of others, and seems to consider himself higher in status than most monsters, and sucks up to Asgore from time to time. He'll never say what's on his mind if it might offend Asgore, and is reluctant to reveal his true, honest thoughts on a matter Asgore requests his opinion on. He's worried how it might make Asgore think of him, but perhaps it is also Gaster's reputation that drives the troubled skeleton. His pride, reputation, sacrificing of his social life (and even his own body) for scientific experimentation, and rich upbringing all contribute to a selfish nature and a superiority complex. Asgore is like a father to him, someone Gaster looks up to and doesn't want to displease or disappoint, but there is also the fear of losing favor with him, is there not? Despite all relationships and history, Asgore is still a king whose word is law. It would make sense Gaster would treat him with such respect, as it is expected from everyone, so Asgore would be the worst person Gaster could possibly wrong. Asgore, as a king, could punish Gaster in any way he saw fit, and as someone close to Gaster, the emotional punishment Gaster would endure would be unbearable for Gaster.

However, Gaster has been gifted with a luxurious wealth of opportunities and achievements, and had the means to pursue his interests. It cost little for someone like Gaster, who was close with the royal family, to fund his activities. It makes sense why Gaster would be so willing to consider others pawns, insignificant, or lower than himself, for no one could stop him if he decided to use his closeness with the royal family as a form of blackmail or a threat to those who oppose him. So Gaster is never told no, and nobody questions him, which makes it easy for him to do whatever he wants and get away with it. Now, Asgore and Toriel weren't strict, cruel rulers, and they're understanding when it comes to conflict or disagreements, but as royalty with the final say on matters, it would be the perfect way for Gaster to get away with everything, as simply implying his relation to the royal family would make it hard for others to deny or question Gaster in any way, shape, or form. Therefore, it's easy to understand how Gaster has little care for what those below royal/honorable/valued status have to say against him. He only respects those who know Gaster on a personal level or have a title demanding his respect. In a way, Gaster's a spoiled brat who thinks he can do whatever he wants. He may claim to invent things that help people, and perhaps his inventions are useful and helpful, but his methods may not have been so pure or innocent. His skeleton book is all about skeletons. The core is an amazing power source for the whole underground, but at the cost of the workers who have to keep it operational and deal with unsafe working conditions (no handrails for example). His theory to escape the barrier in a way Asgore won't have to kill children is admirable to someone he considers a friend, but his methods are immoral, based on torture, enslavement, and child abuse, not to mention very hypothetical and against what said friend(s) would condone.

Coming back around to Papyrus; though his superiority complex is far less egotistical, condescending, and passive aggressive than Gaster's, Papyrus has inherited an unfortunate tendency to think himself better than everyone else. Granted, it is in a friendly, confident realm, but it could easily grow into self-glorification. This seems to have drastically worsened in the Undertale gameplay. Papyrus believes he is the best, and that everyone revolves around him. Of course, his good nature and peaceful attitude keep this in check to a certain degree, but he does occasionally come across as prideful, and has let this get to his head a little too much. Even Sans has noticed. Normal people. Other people. This is the dark-side of Papyrus, the one transgression he inherited from Gaster. Unhealthy Pride.

Now, Temmies may come across as lesser or somehow unintelligent, but as I stated in my comment to the previous comic, they are rather smart, resourceful, and conservative. And if they don't have money for college, how do they have an education anyway? No wonder they're lacking in the speech department! So calling them normal people in comparison to skeletons isn't true nor very nice, a choice of words Sans quickly picks up on. It is partly Sans' fault, however, as his methods to cheer up Papyrus only made Papyrus think he was too good for others, that others are intimidated by his greatness, and that only the bravest have scars. Though it did make Papyrus happy, it's not the best advice, and sometimes it's better to face the facts and expand your own perspective rather than justify yourself in every predicament. At least he has Sans to keep him out of trouble. While Papyrus can protect Sans from physical hurt, Sans protects Papyrus from emotional hurt. Sans has an amazing intuition for the nature and intentions of others, able to read people as if it were instinct, while Papyrus is oblivious and can't fathom the darkness in others, only able to see the light in others, but this makes him more gullible and naïve. Sans looks out for his best interests and knows who to trust, while Papyrus has a loving heart, is self-confident, and has the power to physically protect people. It's a fascinating balance.

Wow... Just... Wow...
This was really insightful. I mean, we all know of Pap's good-natured chase for glory and Gaster being smug and unwilling to humiliate/surrender himself, but you took that and made the implications bloom. Hats off.
