Copyrights in the MMDC made simple...
Since writing my last article, I've had several interesting civil conversations about copyrights and it has become apparent that there is a lot of misunderstanding about copyright issues within the MMDC; well at least in the MMDC outside of Japan. And that's understandable as copyright issues are incredibly complex especially in an international setting. Plus with MMD, much of the resources used are derivative works anyway. So in this article, I will briefly explain the concepts to you but with the following disclaimer:

Of Readmes and Stupid Rules...
Somebody sent me a note the other day about whether or not he could just read just the English readme.txt included in a model download and completely ignore any Japanese readme.txt included with the package as he wasn't Japanese and lives in Europe.
That's a great question and the answer is that you actually should read both if you want a full understanding about what rights you have over the use of the model. But it's not that simple either as in fact, you probably don't have to read the readme.txts at all as you have certain rights provided by Law. This will please some people in the TL : DR crowd. But I will go further, even if you did read everything, most times you could safely ignore the "rules", as they are quaintly termed in the MMD community, both in Japan and here. This obviously only applies if the "rules" are in breach of applicable Laws...
