History:

By the 2340's Starfleet start designing new generation of ships, among them the Korolev class survey cruiser. Class enter service in 2345 when USS Korolev, first of her class was commissioned. Korolev's were designed as larger survey ships more capable of surveying new worlds then old Oberth class that was primary science and survey ship of the fleet for almost century. However during Cardassian - Federation war Korolev class will see little of surveying and exploration and more of combat. Starfleet quickly realize that this ships were more then capable of dealing with anything Cardassians have and were often deployed so that larger ships like Ambassador and Nebula could be used somewhere else. Cardassian ships couldnt match Korolev in its firepower and defenses and only new Ekoor class was strong enough to face even Korolev, but there was to few of them.

By the end of Cardassian war only one Korolev was destroyed. Korolev's Type IX phaser arrays would prove to be deadly during Dominion war where they would cut trough the Cardassian Hideki and Rasilsk classes and Jem'Hadar attack ships with little trouble, however despite been quite resilient ship, Dominion war would prove heavy for the class as many members of Korolev class would be destroyed. By the end of Odonan war in 2382 twenty eight ships would remain in service from original fifty two that were built.

Originally one hundred and twenty was to be built but this number was quickly cut to only fifty two as new and better designs entering service. Starfleet believed by the end of 2355 that Korolev was outdated even more then Ambassador was and with exception to its heavy phaser armament rest of the ship was standard for the era.

Maybe primary problem with the ship was that it was slow both on Warp speeds and Impulse, it has strong shields but weaker hull and no armor at all. However despite this ships proved themself well. In 2382 remaining twenty eight ships received heavy upgrade, new and more efficient warp core, better shielding and better sensors, although weaponry remains the same and hull wasnt improved.

Starfleet planned to start retiring the class starting with 2410.
