Welcome back to a new chapter of Photography 101! It has been a while, however, I hope you will enjoy this new chapter, and that it will be useful for you!

Today we will discuss categorising your photography in DA. If you've taken a look into all the categories the photography section of DA has to offer, you'll know there's a ton of categories, and within that, sub-categories. It can be tough to figure out where a photo goes. This chapter aims to help you to get your photographs in the best fitting category by explaining what they are, and showing some examples.

Let's start off by introducing all the photography categories that we can find here on DeviantArt:

As you can see from this list, there's quite a few of them. I can imagine in some cases, it can be tough to pick out the right category for your photography, especially since most of these main categories also have a lot of subcategories. That confusion is exactly what this guide is for: to help you pick out the best category for your photograph!

Please note: Due to the size of this guide, it has been split in two. This is part one.

Abstract & Surreal

Abstract and Surreal is really quite... well, abstract. This is why I decided to talk to the CV who is currently taking care of the category, JustACapharnaum. She told me the following:
"Abstract photography doesn't obey to any strict photography rule: it doesn't matter if it is out of focus, or grainy etc, it is all about conveying a message, a sentiment, an emotion through photography or other processes."

  • Abstract
"Photography that uses forms, colours and patterns to create a non-figurative image without reference to the actual world"

Double by OlivierAccart  When Winter Spreads Its Wings by AiniTolonen  When We Were Together by LidiaRossana

  • Surreal
"Surrealism takes actual subjects to an other-worldly level"

Life Imitates Art by TheFoxAndTheRaven  Sand... by WWWest  Ink Sea by ahermin

Did you find a photograph in the Abstract & Surreal category that you think deserves a Daily Deviation? Send it as a suggestion to JustACapharnaum!

Animals, Plants & Nature

Animals, Plants and Nature is one of the biggest, and my personal favourite, galleries in the photography category right here on DA. Even outside of DA, APN photography is huge. Because Animals, Plants and Nature covers so much, I talked to JenFruzz, the CV currently taking care of this category. She said the following:
"Animals, Plants, & Nature (commonly referred to as APN) photography is an incredibly diverse subcategory of the Photography gallery on DeviantArt. It spans subjects from vast landscape scenes to the tiniest of insects. This is the home of all things natural from formidable weather formations to haunting forest scenes... From unique captures of wild animals to touching moments that personify our domesticated friends. It is not difficult to get lost browsing APN, the gallery that allows you to travel the world from your home!"

Exclamation Point Please note: The key to Animals, Plants and Nature photography is to have little to no human(-made) elements visible in your photograph. If it is the main subject of the photograph, it may not be suitable for APN.
