UNINTENTIONAL CHRISTMAS COLORS NO TAMA

Finally done with this thingamajig. :sigh: 12"x9", cut paper, colored pencil, marker, microns, acrylic paint, unhealthy amounts of rubber cement, blood sweat tears love. I'mma be sellin' this at Anime Boston in April, so's if you'd like one... well, er, there's only one, so come by early! Say hi. Stay for tea. :star: :star: :star:

Inuyashaaaaaaa. I know, I know, it was everybody's first and we all grew out of it and it dragged on for about eight years and sixty volumes too long and the plot never went anywhere and I - I don't care. This manga changed my god. Damn. Life.

I am barely even kidding.

Don't believe me? Well! February 11th, 2004. I was thirteen years old, my family and I were visiting NYC, I was wandering around in a four-story Barnes&Noble near Rockefeller Center. Third floor. Comics section, for no particular reason. I picked up a book because the spine was shiny and bright yellow and it caught my eye. The first page had things on fire and cute things with fangs. Second page had beautiful kimono patterns and a dynamic composition. Third page had lady priestesses with arrows! More fire! Trees! Tragedy! Death! Baby Yutaan was horrified by such violence, but intrigued by the cute and the pretty and the horrifically long legs, and liked the character design for Mistress Centipede, and had an artistic interest in figuring out why the first few pages of the book looked different from the rest. (Answer: Watercolor. The first few pages were watercolor rendered in black and white, whereas the rest was done in screentone. Why Baby Yutaan found this so odd, I cannot say.)

But then. Oh hot damn, then.

About twenty pages into the first chapter, there's a double-page spread. It's just this one shot of Kagome standing in the forest, looking across a clearing at Inuyasha pinned to the god-tree by the enchanted arrow. I don't know what it is about this spread - just... the delicate hatching in the leaves to show light filtering through. The gesture of Kagome's body. The wide angle. The scale. The line quality. The sheer amount of detail and variety in the plants. The vines twining around Inuyasha's body. The fact that he's higher up the trunk because the tree has kept growing since he was shot. The stillness, the expectation, the atmosphere of the moment, like everything in the world is holding its breath. I don't know. I don't know what it was. But I have never once, in the years since, been as struck by a single image, as eager to see where a story would go, been as amazed by what art could accomplish. I literally lost all strength in my legs and sat down on the floor of Barnes&Noble and decided that I was going to draw comics for the rest of my life, so I could make other people feel exactly the way I did at that moment.

:head in hands: ...because of a two-page spread in Inuyasha.

..........So yeah, that's why it's the first thing I made this year in anticipation for Boston. I outgrew the series, but I still have a giant place for it in my heart.

WELL THAT WAS KIND OF EMBARRASSING WHAT ARE FEELINGS OKAY THEN I HOPE YOU GUYS ALL HAVE A GOOD BREAK FROM SCHOOL SEE YOU IN JANUARY BYE

[EDIT] Alrighty, this piece has actually already been sold ahead of time! I'll try my damndest to get another one made before Boston, though. And of course, the offer to stop by the table and have tea still stands, yo! :star:

[EDIT AGAIN] Replaced the file with a cleaned-up version!

[AND AGAIN] A better cleaned-up version! Plus some Photoshop swishy hair strands, because why not.

[*ANOTHER* EDIT] You can now get prints of this at my INPRNT shop! --> www.inprnt.com/gallery/yutaan/

That's exactly how I feel about Cardcaptor Sakura! The art for that manga inspired me to really get into art when I was a kid. (Not that I have anything great to show for that up here on DA ^^;)

Amazing work as always!!!

CLAMP's work was very inspiring for me as a kid too! I remember being just stunned at the amount of detail they put into characters' hair and costumes. :D

Many of us started with cheesy shonen or shojo manga and it lives in us still...
Not me, though. Spiderman was my first love.
(Okay fine, I was busy pretending I didn't like Pokemon and Card Captor Sakura...)

OMG This is so beautiful, the patterns are so pretty!

I loved reading you story about how Inuyasha changed your life! It changed mine too! :la: Back at that time, I started some sort of imaginary Inuyasha fanfic, and later I realized I could create my own story, so I did! :D Inuyasha inspired me to write my story. With time it has evolved and changed a lot, but the inspiration is still there.

I know you've actually uploaded this one a loooong time ago, but thank you very much for sharing your touching story. A lot of us (myself included) started art for similar reasons: to make people feel that way, to make the world a slightly more beautiful place... And being reminded of that goal, beyond the everyday struggle to get better, helps a lot.

And, of course: you made me want to read the manga ^^

Haha, thank you! It's been so nice to read the comments on this piece and hear people share their own stories about what inspires them.

(And it's a fun manga, even if it does drag on rather long.)

Inuyasha is seriously that one anime that has a special place in your heart, ya know? Funny story. So years and years ago, my two sisters and I watched the anime and stopped after the first season (I guess?) ended. After 119 episodes or something. And we thought it was so lame that it literally ended with them riding off into the sunset. Years later, so about a year ago, did we find out and realize that, no, the anime does not end that way-there was a second season. Like holy cow, we were young, naiive, and didn't know that anime came in seasons! Alas, two of us, the youngest sibling and I, didn't go back to rewatch and finish it, though we know how it/the manga ends. The middle sister went back to watch it and retold it to us.

Haha, that's a cute story! And very kind of your middle sister to tell you how it went. I remember having a similar reaction when the first season of Pokemon ended, and being super upset that it was over. ...Then of course it went straight into the second series, so it was fine, but still!

I love your art, I think it's fantastic, but I am adding this particular picture to my favorites because of your explanation of what this manga has done for your life. I'll tell you what it did for mine. It made me want to write more than I'd ever wanted to write in my entire life. I doodled because of it, sure, but all of the folklore in this opened my mind, so I get you.
Fantastic piece, you're a fantastic artist and I will cherish this forever because SOMEONE GETS IT!!!! <3

Oh man I don't remember how old I was when I first picked up Inuyasha. They did it such a disservice for taking so damn long to wrap shit up-- but I loved it. Thanks for sharing such a fond memory!

LOL at the "horrifically long legs" x'D part AND OMGGGGG totally want to have tea with you and learn from your infinite paper wissdoomm :iconcrycryplz: alas.

Oh MAN, I think the manga that did that to me is cardcaptor sakura. Just, each page with the flower details and big eyes and hair and outfit and alllofthat. I remember when I would secretly stealtake extra transparent paper from school just so I could copy the pages that I was seeing. Have to say that I've only ever watched inuyasha and never really read too much of it. BUt brahhhhh inyuasha def still is one of those ALL TIME CLASSICS UGHHHHHHHHHH how i turned into a furry

Haha, CCS and Chobits (actually, most of CLAMP's stuff, if I'm being honest) also totally stunned me, and I did my fair share of delighted gasping at the details just like you. ^__^

TRUE. All of Clamp's stuff are AMAZING, I also remember when I got older and read xxxHolics for the first time, and the STYLE of the art was just so INSANELY COOL to me. Man, really makes me want to go back to these manga and just... LOOK at them and marvel at them again
