The Realignment

Mara’s parents enroll her in a clandestine “conversion therapy” program. But this program doesn’t try to make lesbians into heterosexual women. Instead, it physically transforms them into men, on the rationale that their desire for women proves they were “born wrong.” In other words, the program doesn’t attempt to change a subject’s sexual orientation; it changes the body so the orientation matches the expected norm.
The logic is simple and chilling: because women who love women are seen as anomalies, and because their desire is considered incurable, they must stop being women. Transformed into men, their attraction to women becomes normal, healthy, and acceptable. Mara didn’t know this—she thought it was another attempt by her parents to make her heterosexual. But they had failed before, and, unable to change Mara’s heart, they resorted to this final measure. They no longer have a lesbian daughter. They have a heterosexual son named Marc. This is a world where every
