Good morning! My name is Ukulele Moon and I've come from the DeviantArt ether to inspect, critique and promote your artwork in an unbiased manner. I just want to say that it has been a delight looking through your gallery and seeing where you come from! I always try to capture a little bit of the author before I sit down and judge their work. I'm a pony artist myself, but not nearly as gifted as you are. You are clearly a person who works towards improvement and self-development and you are to be commended for such bravery!
I am, however, an artist of a different flavor and perhaps sharing our diverse background can help mold our artwork into something even more wonderful than either one of us could imagine! That's my goal here. Now, enough rambling and let's get to the critique, shall we?
One thing I really enjoy about your particular style of drawing ponies is that you can definitely tell that even though this is fan-artwork of a known series... I know that this is your distinct style! You could draw Pinkie Pie, Twilight, or any other canon pony and your style would shine through beautifully!
Here's my issue with the subject though and my suggestion. I realize that this is a gift for another Deviant and their own personal OC so you didn't really have any control over the colors that were used. The mane and tail are brightly colored and stand out clearly from the background. They aren't offensive on the eyes or too harsh on the imagery. The problem lies with the white on this character.
The stroke and the coat color are a bit too washed out. Perhaps a tad darker on the stroke to help it bounce from the page OR using a shadow effect on the background. The definition of the ears is really lost here. I'm also seeing a bit of rough stroke work around the glasses. I think you were trying to go for a shaded effect there but I'm not sure you really accomplished it.
Either way, you win back the audience by providing us with a beautiful picture of a character doing exactly what his destiny (cutie-mark) allows! The expression is lively and the composition is inspired! You are clearly a gifted person with a great flare for life that translates into your drawings! Thank you for being part of our community.
Best Regards,
Ukulele Moon
