Ohhh Beautiful Ireland UPDATE

By
Location: Goles River Valley, east end of Glenelly, Sperrin Mountains, Co.Tyrone, Northern Ireland
_______
Looking back at this, it's so beautiful and inviting, full view please!

This is the Goles Valley, a shelter area just off the upper Glenelly valley. There are half-a-dozen or so wee houses and barns up the long lane. No-one lives here any more so we thought it would be a great place to camp. Sheltered with a few basic amenities and hidden from public view.

We pitched our tents beside a conifer wood and a small stream on a flat grazed meadow; a really beautiful spot!

i've yet to venture into the sperrins! my group don't like them as they're easy walking and fairly featureless!

Who do you walk with?

The Sperrins have their own charm.  It's nice to go there by yourself and you will most likely be the only person walking up there.  I know the bloc directly west of me very well, with Carntogher being the highest point.   I've yet to summit Sawel and the rest along the main 'ridge' north of Glenelly, but I reckon I will run it some day.

It's a private club - keep ourselves to ourselves

I've heard there are access issues in the Sperrins with the local farmers not so helpful in terms of rights of way and access. Where's a good base to set off from?

Yeah I've heard that too.  I normally just sneak myself in and once you are up high enough, you're not likely to get bothered.  There aren't a whole load of paths, so prepare to go bog trotting.

If you want to climb the highest peaks, you can actually drive to over 400m along the Sperrin road which cuts through the range between Glenelly and Park.  You can hop out at the pass @54.8220302,-7.0066864 and hike to Sawel, Dart, Meenard and quite a few more if someone parks at the end point.

There is a nice horseshoe route which takes you around  the Goles watershead combining Mullaghsallgh, Oughtmore, Mullaghaneany and Meenard.  You can begin at Goles forest along the main Glenelly road.   Plenty of good info on mountainviews.ie

Closer to me there are some easy routes on Carntogher and they are open to the public.  Great views and a lot of history in this area.  Begin at 54.890610, -6.739486

Simply beautiful! (Hope you don't mind, I pulled your photo and it's currently my background on my computer-it's the visual representation of my "happy place" while I am at work). Thank you for sharing such beauty with all of us!
