A tsunami had hit a coastal village. An elderly man went to the beach to survey the damage, whereupon he saw a young boy walking along the shoreline, picking up the starfish, and gently placing them back in the ocean.
The boy was barely at the start of the beach, which stretched ahead of him for miles, with hundreds upon thousands of starfish stuck to the rocks above the high-tide mark.
"Are you mad?' the old man asked 'There are thousands of stranded starfish, and many miles to go. You can't even make a difference."
"Well,' replied the youth, as he held a starfish aloft 'it makes a difference to this one."
