Les Fleurs du Mal by Yoann-Lossel Les Fleurs du Mal by Yoann-Lossel

[ENG] "The Flowers of Evil" - 2014
I want to tell a little bit what is behind my work.

I did a lot of research to realize this subject, Baudelaire is a literary man that I love and I wanted to pay a tribute to him.
There are many hidden symbols in this subject : three women of Baudelaire's life, like three muses. A tribute to Orientalism that marked his life. And of course, a tribute to " The Wrecks", the collection composed of all the poems having been removed from the "Flowers of evil", for "outrage to public morality and good morals". I made it a point to include these wrecks in my "Flowers of Evil".
I also represented "The Giantess", one of my favorite poems of this collection but also many other poems, such as "The Sun".

Finally, there is a tribute to Waterhouse and Mucha in this painting. The boat in the foreground, is inspired by Waterhouse's "The Lady of Shalott", and the yellow mountains in the background, are a tribute to Mucha's "The Celebration of Svantovit", from the Slavic Epic.

Baudelaire did not like nature enough to appreciate this painting, but I could not deny my love for the forest and the ruins.

"Evil is done without effort, naturally, it is the working of fate; good is always the product of an art."

..........................

Do you come from Heaven or rise from the abyss,
Beauty? Your gaze, divine and infernal,
Pours out confusedly benevolence and crime,
And one may for that, compare you to wine.

Quel travail impressionnant !
