Three children
Chosen at birth
Assigned their roles
And prepared for their game

The leader, the human
The boy at the top
Too bad her chosen style
Doesn't align with their goals

No matter how hard
Adults try to control
Children will never
Live up to their expectations

The love interest, the dwarf
The token female
However he decides
Skirts aren't right for him

Manipulating children
To pursue certain goals
Will never turn out well
For either party

The smart one, the elf
The right-hand man
His interests don't align
With the planned route

The three children
Despite their refusal
Are still sent into their roles
And into a game of life and death

A fourth child
Was never planned for
I am the variable
That will break the experiment

The daughter of two defectors
They taught me how to infiltrate
So I find my way in
To meet the heroes

The girl with
A forbidden avatar
Learns to manipulate
The world around her

When I remove the veil
And I reveal the truth
They respond in shock
And they leave me behind

But I'll continue
Moving through this world
I will be more than
A nameless NPC

Soon the kids realize
They can't leave
And start to listen
To a strange girl's theories

Soon the trio
Becomes a quartet
And the already ruined plans
Become even more fractured

Together we'll learn
How to escape this world
And change the fate
Of our new home

I pull a cookbook from its shelf, right next to the ceramic bowls, flip through the batter-stained pages.   His orange and white hairs still cling to my sweatshirt, a touch of blood smeared across the collar.   At last, I find the recipe I was searching for. Peanut butter cookies.  My finger traces down the list of ingredients: two and one fourth cups all-purpose flour, one teaspoon baking soda, two eggs. A rustle comes from the next room over, and I pause—glancing up, past the breakfast bar.   My sister is lying on the den couch, her face to the backrest.   A blanket is s

Once upon a time, I lost my heart, stolen by a thief who distracted me in the dark with sweet lies and opened buttons. I drifted, insubstantial, until I found my heart again, abandoned beside a country road. I picked it up and put it in my pocket, took it home, washed it gently in warm water and No More Tears shampoo, and put it back where it belonged. It hurt at first, its pounding loud, working furiously to infuse pale limbs with rushing blood, alive, but the pain passed and I smiled in the afternoon sun. Then you came. And my poor heart, pilfered once more, is lost again. But this time, as

My Life In a Nutshell
My Life In a Nutshell I (That's just another word for me.) I tried to reason with myself today. I lost. Reason won. I didn't give you a fair chance to run before you fell in love with me. By the way, why did you fall in love with me? Or did you trip over the last heart you broke and land in my arms? I saw the truth today. It wasn't pretty. Ditto. Yesterday I had a dream. You lost me. I found me. The world use to look so dim. Oh wait, there's the light switch. Damn, the light just burned out! The future looks so bright. No wait, that's just car headlights. I think I died and went to... Ah crap! Not you again. Weren't you

You know when you have donuts for a few days and then they start to become all sweaty? That's the worst, man. That's just awful. I hate it.
