The Cathedral, Manchester
Because of the extensive refurbishment carried out both inside and out during the 19th century, people can be forgiven for thinking that, from appearances at least, Manchester Cathedral is a relatively modern church. In fact it does date back to medieval times, beginning with a Saxon parish church near the current site in or around 700.
Through the centuries and a succession of royal commissions and endowments it grew into a collegiate church, and by the 16th century chantry chapels and other buildings had been added to it. Under the Cathedrals Act of 1840, the warden and fellows of the collegiate church were translated into a dean and canons in preparation for becoming the cathedral of the new Manchester Diocese which came into effect in 1847.
The external stonework was replaced between 1850 and 1870 and its west tower was heightened in 1868. The vestry and porches were added in 1898. Consequently, the cathedral gives the impression of being a 19th-century structure.
