The John Hay Library is the second oldest library on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
It is located on Prospect Street opposite the Van Wickle Gates. (see below for a postcard of those gates)
After its opening in 1910, the Hay Library became the main library on campus, replacing the library now known as Robinson Hall. Today, the John Hay Library is one of five individual libraries that make up the University Library. The Hay houses the University Library's rare books and manuscripts, the University Archives, and the Library's special collections. Many of those materials require special handling and preservation.
I journeyed here last weekend for a special exhibition related to one of Providence's famous sons, Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890–1937).
Lovecraft travelled from his native Rhode Island down the east coast to St. Augustine, Florida during the spring and summer of 1934. The Hay had on display numerous correspondence, postcards and related drawings from that trip and I was eager to see them.
