Victorian Advertising - Spud Man

Vintage Advertising "trade" card (blank)
Circa 1880s
Richmond & Co., publishers

This fella is one of a number of anthropomorphic "vegetable people" produced as stock cards by the Richmond Co.
I've seen him used as a trade card more than once for various businesses. Mine is blank.

LOLTATO Trade cards
typically have a picture on one side and an ad on the other. There were custom cards printed for specific products, and stock cards which could be used for any product. Trade cards were popular for medicines, sewing, and farm equipment, and a range of other products.

If this was supposed to make me want potatoes more or feel an affection for the brand, it's failing spectacularly. The level of realism and actual human face detail applied made him off-putting to say the least. Also, I'm not quite sure what the thinking was on depicting him as a traveler, potatoes don't get around much.
