   May the New Year be a happy one to you, happy to many more whose happiness depends on you.

There is perhaps no better tale to ring an old year out and a new year in than Charles Dickens’ goblin story, The Chimes. This little drama by the great storyteller deals with the temptation to look back on the tragedies of a year gone by with dejection, believing—and truly believing—that the world has gone to the dung-heap and that humankind is “born bad.”

This book rings out a tremendous moral for all who live surrounded by suffering. In the words of the story's protagonist Toby Veck, once he has learned: “I know that we must trust and hope, and neither doubt ourselves nor doubt the good in one another.”

The Chimes is a reminder that, though the world is plagued with misfortune, ugliness, and tragedy, it remains the duty of everyone to improve and advance with spirits unbeaten by the terrors that besiege us.

   The Chimes are ringing in the New Year. Hear them!

 PS. The title is somewhat of a punny joke - the origin of the phrase "___ like the Dickens" has nothing to do with Chas. Dickens. Dickens is a late 16th century euphemism, specifically a minced-oath, for the word devil, possibly a shortened version of devilkins. But the quote being a Dickens quote from a book that has goblins in it, it seemed appropriate!
