Physalis alkekengi are easily identifiable by the large, bright orange/red papery covering over their fruits, which resemble paper lanterns giving this plant the common name Chinese Lantern. 
It is a perennial herbaceous plant growing to 40–60 cm tall. It is a popular ornamental plant, widely cultivated in temperate regions of the world.
It can be invasive with its wide-spreading root system sending up new shoots some distance from where it was originally planted.

As the internal fruits grow with time, the paper covering dries and cracks, changing its color to a dull white and so creating the illusion of a skeleton like cage for the small fruit.
