Silk Moths can be a pale cream, grey or brown colour. The caterpillars of Silk Moths are known as Silk Worms,
and produce silk when they change into adult moths by wrapping their entire bodies in a silk cocoon provided by their salivary gland.
 These cocoons are collected by humans to weave silk fabric. The moth lives a very brief life of 5-10 days, with males having a longer lifespan than females.
 After mating, the Female Moth will lay between 300-500 eggs, and die, whereas the male Silk Moth will search for another mate if it is not too old. 
Domesticated Silk Moths today are descendants of a wild species of living Silk Moth and cannot fly, unlike their wild counterparts. 

The origin of harvesting and using the Silk from silkworms is believed to be founded by the Empress Lei Zu, wife of the Yellow Emperor,
who found the end of a strand and unraveled it and wrapped the silk thread around her finger of a silkworm that fell into her teacup.
 Upon seeing a caterpillar after the silk ran out, she realized that the caterpillar was the source of silk.  
The art of silk manufacturing was guarded by the Chinese protected the art of silk manufacturing for 3000 years,
 by prohibiting and punishing by death to take cocoons and eggs out of the country.
