Description

Monthly Rodea painting time! We're over halfway done with the year, let's see if I can keep this up until the end of the year.

This is another one from my list of Rodea-related things I've been wanting to do for quite a long time now: drawing Rodea flying next to the Ion Wave. Despite the airship following Rodea through the entire game, there exists no sufficient artwork for the ship itself — the only thing is a very small and super sketchy concept art from the official artbook. The concept art in question is so small and the lines are so sketchy that it is practically impossible to make out any finer details of the ship, making it really hard to draw anything using it as the only reference.

So, how did I solve this problem? Well, by making a huge-ass screenshot compilation of the in-game model of the Ion Wave, and using the beginning part of this pre-release trailer from 2011 as a reference, that's how.
(and yes, the game came out in 2015 — the original Wii version was fully completed in 2011 and was delayed because the publisher wanted a simultaneous release with the planned 3DS version, and look how that turned out)

Also, this year's experiments I've been doing in order to rework my coloring style seems to be bleeding in my fanarts now. This piece was largely painted with three colors only. I lovingly refer to this color scheme as "cotton candy dreams".

Watercolor, gouache, pigment liner, colored pencil and white gel pencil, around three hours I think.

really cool palette, i love the contrast between blue/grey and red/pink

i also appreciate the lengths you went through to try and depict the flying ship accurately, i know what it's like to have limited references, and needing to interpret or make up details. i'm sure, should there ever be someone wanting to draw the ion wave in the future, they will appreciate this piece!
