Supernatural power by yagatama Supernatural power by yagatama
I'm a big fan of Tsutomu Nihei, who is the auther of Manga
such as 'BLAME!' or 'ABARA'.

Initially, this piece of work was supposed to be a
fan-art of his latest Manga 'BIOMEGA', then I changed
my mind.

Sigh,,,please, someone teach me how to draw BG.

I've really been liking Tsutomu Nihei's work as well. His worlds have such a level of development that really makes me feel inadequate when I look at my own work. Do you enjoy how messy his line work is? For myself it was really enjoyable but I wonder how you would feel about it.

Do you ever get to work on your own works professionally at all? Your artwork is so beautiful.

but theres one thing I don't get..
why is her shirt open.. does flashing everyone grant her supernatural abilities?

it just seems kind of odd and distracting.

0. colours get less intense with the distance.
Use that to show distance and atmosphere
1. details blur with distance. Use wide depth of field variation to achieve the feel of spatial depth.

See Sunamori's comment above:

The background is painted beautifully. I like it. But the perspective is wrong. All vertical lines must run towards the same vanishing point (below your feet).

As a quick solution, you could simply select the city background on the left and turn it counterclockwise until the lines run in the same direction as the lines in the foreground.

Otherwise this is just jaw-dropping amazing. Thanks for sharing it here.

Much better. You might try turning it half a degree or a degree further. Or better yet, use the distort tool (Edit > Transform > Distort), this will allow you to pull the upper left hand corner to the left, so that the houses are no longer parallel but spread out like a fan.

If you need help with getting your perspectives right in your future images, I recommend to you:

- Pat Quinn, Basic Perspective for Comics & Illustration ($12.95 from Blue Line Pro)
The mere basics. Just find the example for what you want to do and ignore the rest of the book. Practical and ready to get you started immediately without having to understand the theory.

- David Chelsea, Perspective for Comic Book Artists
This fun-to-read book gives a detailed yet easy to understand explanation of everything you need to know about perspective.

- Joseph d'Amelo, Perspective Drawing Handbook
An older book, this gives you an insight into a little more advanced perspective, yet it is still entertaining and readable and not really too technical.

These are the books I like best. I worked through about thirty books to find the handful that would suit me best as handbooks for the everyday problems I have while drawing. Of the introductory books, these three had the most detailed explanations and were at the same time most practical. There are of course some books for technical illustrators, architects and engineers that explain everything and will leave no questions unanswered, but those are hard to understand and go far beyond what we need. The perspective books for hobby artists are often too basic and leave out much that we do need.

Get one of these books, it will make you happy.

And another tip: I just started looking for mistakes after I read your comment and knew that you were not happy with the background. If you want feedback or help, then that is good. But if you want to sell your art to a customer (or impress us amateurs here), just tell everyone how pleased and proud you are, and they will be pleased and happy, too. The focus in this image is on the figure in the foreground, and it draws all my attention to it. I would not have noticed the out-of-perspective houses, I was so staring at those bluish boobs ;-)

whoa really nice rendering and background!

now I REALLY want to see you do a Nihei fan-art:P

If I may be so bold as to make an artistic observation, the composition could have been pushed a lot more along with the pose of the character. there already is a sense of movement, which is good, but I'm not feeling any direction where it's heading.

I could be totally off though, haha. But maybe it's food for thought for your next work?

As always, the picture is very detailed and beautiful, however, if you allow me a critic, I perceive a problem with the background.
The arch over which she's flying, the building in the back where men are running and the far landscape background have all three different perspectives and don't seem to match well each other...
I hope I'm not offending you with this observation.

Thanks for your advise, Sunamori san.
Following what you told me, I stared at this work for a while to understand
what's wrong.

I fixed the perspective of the BG, I tilted the landscape anti-clockwise a little.
How does it look now?

I think that the building right behind her and the landscape background are perfectly aligned now :)
However a minor issue still remains in the bridge right behind her feet. I noticed it looking at the picture again, but I have the feeling -although of course I may be wrong- that the perspective of the bridge and that of the two men standing on it are kind of different. The mark that defines the bridge's perspective are the two lines on the right of the two men (the intersection of the stones of the bridge).
I'm not sure, but maybe tilting the two line on the right might help.
Apart from this, now the picture looks allright. And she's really beautiful. I wonder if that is a character of yours?
