New roots might seem an impossible concept to somebody who has lost all of hers, but potatoes sprout them all the time. Even potatoes from the supermarket will do. They sell the white russets your mom planted every spring in bulk. Set aside five of her large clay pots and fill them up an inch from the brim with soil.
Tip: don’t be wasteful and plant an entire potato in every pot. Instead, cut them into seed potatoes, pieces that have one to three eyes each.
Let the seed potatoes sit for a few days, dwelling in uncertainty. Let them stare at you, see too much with too many eyes, as you break down for the first time since. You don’t even know what triggered it. Reconsider planting them at all. Change your mind and back again multiple times, make this process harder than it needs to be.
