How to Reap What You Sow
How to Reap What You Sow
Yussra MT Ebrahim
Fall 2018
New roots might seem an impossible concept to somebody who has lost all of hers, but potatoes sprout them all the time. Even potatoes from the supermarket will do. They sell the white russets your mom planted every spring in bulk. Set aside five of her large clay pots and fill them up an inch from the brim with soil.
Tip: don’t be wasteful and plant an entire potato in every pot. Instead, cut them into seed potatoes, pieces that have one to three eyes each.
Let the seed potatoes sit for a few days, dwelling in uncertainty. Let them stare at you, see too much with too many eyes, as you break down for the first time since. You don’t even know what triggered it. Reconsider planting them at all. Change your mind and back again multiple times, make this process harder than it needs to be. Finally, place one seed potato into each pot, about three i

The Brightest Bulb
The Brightest Bulb
Yussra MT Ebrahim
Fall 2018
I used to believe I was the brightest bulb in the room. That was before I started rolling with my board game crew in Canada. They humbled me by granting me what I’d always longed for: a worthy opponent. And they trained me into the legend I am today. But this is not that story. This is the story of my new crew, the friends I made when I moved back to Connecticut after college, and my weekly attempts to show them the light.
We’re a group of five, but we often end up playing as four, since the newlyweds always insist on teaming up. No one protests anymore, because we know by now it’s better this way. When we first started playing together, Dre kept showing Missy his resource cards and asking for her input, and he even acted confused and she got indignant when we called them out for cheating. I invite her because she’s my sister, him because they come as a pair. She

Salt and Vinegar

Fall 2018
Eleven months of the year, she’s with her mom and stepdad, and honestly, that’s no picnic either, but every July, Mubina is expected to suffer through a pointless, physically and emotionally exhausting cross-country road trip with Sa’id, her father. That’s been the arrangement ever since her parents divorced when she was thirteen.
She feels nothing when she sees the RV parked in the driveway, but dread pricks the bottom of her heart and drips into her stomach as she climbs the stairs of the vehicle and takes a look inside. The space is somehow even more cramped than she remembers, and smells strongly of citrus cleaner. He must have just wiped everything down to prepare for her arrival. Her stepdad hands her luggage up to Sa’id, a little too eagerly, while her mom merely waves from the door. Shoulders slumped from the weight of her backpack and her misery, Mub

“Does your family support Osama bin Laden?”
Five years after 9/11, I was chatting with my sixth grade history teacher after class when she suddenly asked me that. I felt my blood go still. I felt the lurid light of the New Hampshire classroom shift into the stark contrast of an interrogation room in my mind. I started to panic like I was in trouble. Not just with her, but with the government, as though by asking, she had somehow made it true. I tried my best to seem casual.
“I don’t really know who that is.”
It was the truth. I only had the vaguest awareness at the time of what he had done, and my understanding of 9/11 was muddled with that of America’s occupation of Iraq, my family’s homeland, which during the most intense year of the war had experienced a 9/11 every w

Play Us Out
Play Us Out

Fall 2018
The professor was delighted to be the studio guest featured that week on the local radio station. Not for his ego. He didn’t need confirmation of his importance from some host with a pierced ear who was probably young enough to be his grandson. No, the professor simply relished the opportunity to talk somebody’s ear off about his work. Imagine all the ears he would have at his disposal with his voice broadcast through the county. The moment the studio light overhead went red, the professor prattled on about his psychology research on attention and listening in human conversation.
Ironically, the host wasn’t really listening at all, though he was good at faking it. He knew which type of lull in the professor’s speech required him to interject a detached agreement into the dialogue, and he had a list of questions in front of him to read from as soon as a silence settled.

Violence Came Naturally
Violence Came Naturally
Yussra MT Ebrahim
Fall 2018
The rain was a blessing as she walked home that night from her office to her apartment through threatening streets where her presence felt like an intrusion. Of course she felt bad for them, the same people she saw on her walks daily, clothed in the same worn sweatshirts, camped against the same storefronts that receded slightly from the foot traffic. Still, she always walked with her key poking through her fist. They acted like the general public didn’t exist, arguing in the middle of the sidewalk, and she had to step around them, into oncoming traffic, to get by. Sometimes they shoved each other, and this was when she respected them the least. She figured violence came naturally to some people, and such instincts explained how they ended up like this. Occasionally, one of them would look over and glare at her like she had wronged him, and she would feel more self-conscious than afraid. Tonight she wa

His wife had turned off the fan in the night, so he was an avoidable kind of disgusting. Then in the kitchen, he saw that she had already left for work, and his kids were catching up on homework at the table, their textbooks piled onto his seat. At the office, he could swear he was the only one the receptionist didn’t deem worthy of a smile. During their break, his coworkers leaned against his cubicle, swapping stories; it wasn't his break. So he felt oddly honored when the neighbor’s cat approached him as he got out of his car.

Thank You for the Moon
Thank You for the Moon
Yussra MT Ebrahim
10/18/2018
I can't look at You, Allah
or even the sun You made
by its light I am too awed
of its fire I am afraid
I can't look at You, Allah
even the mountain crumbled
humbled as it beheld
I can't look at the sun
it would blind and burn me
leave me shelled
I can't look at You, Allah
or a photon of Your light
only its reflection
can I gaze upon at night
the moon is a blessing
a clever creation to reveal
though I am blind and deaf
I have fingers to feel
since the Creator is Most Glorious
and even creation is too much
a reflection of creation
is all I can touch
how diluted my perception of You
the moon all my eyes can stand
my mind must not be able
to so much as understand
a fraction of a fraction
of the cosmos You command
I praise You for the sun
but there are limits to me
it is only through Your moon
that I can look at You and see

Secondary Growth
Secondary Growth
Yussra MT Ebrahim
Fall 2018
The first time an insect implied that her bark was too rough, she was little more than a sapling. Back then, she used to spend her energy growing her limbs up and out to reach every corner of the canopy. That was before she learned her bark was not smooth enough and her leaves were misshapen. Now they are caterpillar-consumed, more hole than substance. Now her energy is best expended on secondary growth, the thickening of her trunk. She forms a new ring every year, another layer of protection, another barrier, when all she’d wanted was to know the world.

Ravenous Heart
Ravenous Heart
Yussra MT Ebrahim
9/15/2018
I do not want to want
I want not to yearn
especially not for what
I cannot simply earn
I do not want to need
or think that I do
just because the basics
have been covered by You
such blessings branch into
two paths from one seed
one the way of gratitude
the other of greed
in the end it is my choice
that can lead me to greed
entitlement, not seeing
I want and not need
yet heavy with want
aches my ravenous heart
so heavy with prayer
my palms play their part
I did not choose this feeling
it must be a test
if I keep praying, I trust
I will keep being blessed

Salam, I'm Yussra MT Ebrahim, an Iraqi-American writer and teacher, and a Muslim woman who loves to create comics and poetry! I teach writing to undergraduate students in New England, and write about topics like Islam, war, terrorism, Islamophobia, and the Muslim experience in the West. My goal is to promote awareness, compassion, and peace. I also have a background in botany, and adore nature and biology. But creative productivity is my greatest delight. My passion for writing poetry dates back to middle school, and I've been making comics since I was seven. Poetry is a pleasure and a tool to fight oppression, and I think the comic as a storytelling form is one of the best things in this world. I love making people laugh, feel, and think, and I really enjoy drawing, and seek to keep improving. I'm more of a traditional artist, but I've dabbled with various media. I especially like pen and pencil, watercolor pencil, art marker, and Photoshop. Thank you so much for checking out my work, and feel free to get in touch with me!
