Hurrrr Durrrrr Imma Photographer Nao by XxThatCreepyGirlxX Hurrrr Durrrrr Imma Photographer Nao by XxThatCreepyGirlxX
YET ANOTHER Edit: I actually don't really hate Instagram. In fact, I actually just got one and I can see why people like it. It's fun and a nice way to share you photos. But I don't treat it like Photoshop or anything. I'm actually trying to save up for that xD

ANOTHER Edit: For the most part, thank you for being respectful and mature while commenting, even if you disagree with this stamp. That's not something you usually see on deviantArt these days.

NOTE: If you just use Instagram for fun and don't act like you're a legitimate artist because of it, that's fine. I'll leave you alone <3

But sadly, a lot of people DO claim to be photographers just because they downloaded some cheap smartphone app. Why does this bug me?

1) Your typical iPhone (or smartphone in general) has only so many megapixels, so the quality pretty much sucks and you can't enlarge the image at all without it becoming too pixelated. I may have only taken graphics design for two years, but I think that low resolution "masterpieces" should NEVER be passed off as art! And blurring it until you can't identify whether that's a person, a horse, or a McDonalds Happy Meal (yes, I have seen people Instagram THAT before) just makes it looks even worse. I'm not sure whether you're taking grainy, blocky "photographs" for some kind of weird hipster irony or because you just don't care and only want to get "likes" on Facebook.

2) It makes the whole idea of art less special. I'm not one of those elitists that hate digital photography. I LOVE digital photography actually. But Photoshop still takes plenty of skill to master (I STILL don't know how to make a text mask!) and Instagram is something even a six your old can use. It doesn't require any kind of learning at all! And people trying to pass themselves as artists just by pressing the sepia button just takes all the beauty out of art as a whole and makes it cheesy and lame. It's pretty much the autotune of photography.

3) Instagramming an already ridiculous or tacky subject doesn't make it better. Most of the Instagram photos that flood my poor facebook newsfeed are actually worse than they would be if they were just in their original format. I see pictures of greasy McDonalds burgers. I see pictures of shoes. I see pictures of half-dressed girls making duck faces in their bathroom (with a toilet and shelf of personal hygeine products in the background, of course). These lovely works of "art" are already tastless on their own. Does putting a shredded-looking frame around them, adding fake scratches, blurring them up, and abusing the sepia button make them any better! Nope! It makes it even worse.

But I think I'm beating a dead horse right now so I'm going to be a good little girl for the rest of the day and stop ranting. If you are an Instagram "photographer" who was horribly offended by this, feel free to write me a long winded letter full of F-bombs, homophobic remarks, and claims that I'm "just jealous". Have a nice day! ^_^

To be honest instagram's filters sucks as a whole and I'm not really satisfied with it.
I love to make pictures and sometimes I use those overrated vintage filters, but I at least did them on photoshop :/.

It reminds me of those blingee pictures or cameroid...it just looks sooo cheap, but I've been searching this because my brother was using fingerpaint on his ipad and said to himself ''I feel like an artist''.

I was raging so hard. So hard. I think I was being trolled though.

But yes instagram as a socialnetwork must be fun! I use a similair app to share my personal photos with friends and family but NEVER call them ''artistic''. In fact I never call my photos, even if they were made with a real camera artistic...

Let's just say that Instagram is unprofessional and using it is a tool for cheating in photography. I don't have a real camera, but I sure don't have the app on my phone.

All it is is a free toy for lazy Android phone users and anything that comes from Instagram, whether it's your breakfast, a duck, or some whore, doesn't mean a thing to me.

It's good as a toy or something strictly for fun but some people use it as a means of bullshitting their way out of learning the real processes of photography. It's lazy.

Honestly? I love Instagram, I think it's fun, it's neat, but you are absolutely correct. Taking photos on your cellphone or iPod and using pre-made filters on them is not art by any stretch of the imagination. I'm a graphic designer by profession, but I had to learn photography, both digital, and darkroom processing, and I can tell you that real photography is a whole lot of hard work to even obtain one usable image. So I find it a bit insulting that people taking "dramatically" filtered shots of their Starbucks order are calling themselves photographers.
Again, I like Instagram, but it's not art.

I actually got an Instagram not long ago and I think it's fun and cute. But if you really want it to be art, you should make the filters yourself. There's no work put into it. I've done both digital and film photography. With film photography, the chemicals could get messed up or your negatives could get too exposed, and with digital, making those filters and effects look professional is not a quick and easy process. Instagram is fun and all, but there's not enough work put into it that it can be called art.

I agree. I've also done darkroom and digital, and I have to say, some people have a lot of nerve to take a picture on a cellphone, click two buttons and call it art.

I agree with you. I was against it for the longest time until i got it yesterday. It's really useful if you don't want to flood your watchers inboxes with mediocre pictures. The thing I still have a problem with is the fact that people take pictures of themselves. Not for art but for "other" purposes. That stuff ruins the app and makes it inappropriate for children to use. It also sorta of like dA. The good thing: Anyone can post anything. The bad thing: Anyone can post anything.

Thank you. It annoys me a great deal with My peers who think they take amazing pictures when I knew more about photography at 6 years old than they do now. I'm serious. Instagram and bathroom self-photos do not count as photography. I have a little camera, so I don't have the best equipment, but I have a knack for photography and knowledge. I know so many people (and am friends with several) who believe that an iPhone app that allows you to edit photos amd apply a bunch of filters to them make you a professional photographer.

I'm promised my grandfather's SLR once he gets a new camera, and I'll hopefully get back into taking pictures.

I'll take "photos" with my iPhone and my Digital Elph-type camera. I do not consider myself as a photographer, but I do consider my first photo taken at Camden Yards on the old Nikon I used at 5 years old on Opening Day; watching my Orioles play baseball and my excitement on the day, I think the pictures there captured my emotion. Now if Peter Angelos would sell the team to someone who cares, I'll become a baseball fan, but he puts no money into my home team and yet still makes money off of them. But my shot wasn't steady as I was jumping up and down in excitement, and I was zoomed in on the pitcher as he threw the first pitch of the game.

I have an Instagram, and I use it a lot to share my photos. I think of it as a fun kind of app where others who don't have a DA account can share stuff. And I post more private and more personal photos there for my good friends to see since none of them have a DA account. So, it doesn't suck necessarily, and it's kind of a fun thing.

But, I must agree with you on the whole "I have an Instagram, so I am a photographer". Now, I am not saying that there aren't photographers who have a Instagram, because I rather think of myself as a photographer. But, there's much more to photography that just snapping a perfect shot from a perfect angle or something. It's about the feeling and the emotion, or the meaning behind it. How it makes you feel behind the lens, the beauty, or expression portrayed in the photo.

So yeah, there's my little schpeal about Instagram. I love the app, it's fun, and I like it, and I know of some really good photographers on Instagram. Yeahh, thanks!

It does honestly sound like a fun app, and I guess the app itself doesn't suck, it's really just the pretentious "lol imma pro photographer lol" mentality some people have. I use PicsArt and manage to make some pretty things, but I also have a film camera from the 60's and have been taking some classes.

And thank you for stating your opinion in a mature way :) It's nice when people can do that.

I personally love Instagram for the following reasons: I love to take pictures, and share them with my friends and family. Yes there is Facebook, but I don't have a Facebook and have no desire for one. Instagram just makes it easier for me to share my pictures with people I know. I do agree with you though, Instagraming does not make you a professional photographer! There is a lot more to photography than just snapping the perfect shot, which you obviously know! ;)

KFDSJSFSD THIS SO MUCH DSLKFJSADKLFS THIIISS. There is this one chick on my facebook who rapes the fucking filters on instagram and everyone goes "OEMGEEE, U SOAAA PURDY LYKKE GUURRL. U GOT SKEELLZ." Bitches please. =.=''' She raped it and pounded on the make-up to take a fucking DUCK picture and look nothing like herself! Yes she's pretty but argh... I just don't like her use of instagram and fucking pounds of make-up. :c

Fortunate for me, when I post some of my art up, whether it'd be a photo manip or a drawing of mine, I usually get a comment or two and a like or three. c: I have really supportive friends and they're pretty artsy themselves! o: Sucks to read that others don't have similar friends... :/// PicsArt is great! :) It's cute and fun, I haven't used instagram and frankly... I don't want to. :c Just simply because I've become prejudice against it. xD

dafajsfs. Fuck that motivational shit. :c It was eh at first and is now annnoyying. Being a photographer means capturing a moment of time in a specific way. It's technique and skill, you gotta do the right turn of the camera, use the right flash, the right resolution, you have to zoom out sometimes and you have take many shots before you get an ok one. :c

I think that using your phone's camera is good for practice. You can work on getting the basic concept of capturing the moment down, however if you are to upload it and think of it professionally then you must invest in a camera, and preferably a canon. You also need to invest in art programs made for photography and manipulations (Photoshop, Corel Aftershot, etc.). :c

Eep my dog licked my glasses! o.e'' Haha I agree, phone cams are good c: Just ... not if you are serious or semi-serious about photography. :P I don't have anyone who spams like that except that one girl and her face. /Always her face./
