My alarm rings loudly, but not too loudly, on the floor beside my mattress.  I instantly sit up and open my eyes.  Months of paranoia - no, rational fear - have taught my body to wake up early and without complaint.  There's no bed in my house; I prefer to sleep low to the ground, below my window ledge.  Guns can't see me there.  It's still fairly dark outside, so it's safe to go get my daily supplies: bread, dried meat, some vitamin tablets, and water.  Just to make sure the coast is clear, I peer through my heavily tinted window and scan the streets below me.  Nobody in sight.  Time to go. Walking to the "secret store" always has some...
