Monteblanca is a far north dwarven settlement that my D&D group is about to visit sometime soon. That's how it looks in the summer, but my party is about to visit it in winter. Shit timing.

Notes: Worldbuilding
* The settlement is located in the midst of a giant ice flats. Ice flats are almost completely flat, with some rocks sticking out of the ice every now and then.
* Those bits of rock that sticks out of the flats usually signifies a volcanic hotspot, which means free energy. The dwarves can be warm, inside or out.
* Despite the settlement being located in the middle of ice flats, farming is possible. Not just underground (where certain edible mushrooms grow), but on the surface as well (by keeping crops warm). In addition to that, white sails above the crops are used both to reflect additional sunlight to the crops, as well as for keeping the warm air near the crops for a while longer.

Other notes
* IM FELL font family(ies?) have become my favourite serif font this weekend. Ez best font ever.
* I originally intended making the background dark by the means of storm clouds. However, I didn't manage to pull that of in a convincing manner, so I decided to produce a little bit of handwavium by importing that darkness thing from Banner Saga.
Another location for my discord group. Took about 6-7 hours all together.

Ledorob is one of the few settlements at the edge of great ice flats, serving as a port for ice ships bringing goods from dwarven settlements around some volcanic hotspots further up north. It's not a cheap place to live, as the only thing that grows there are spruces and grass (and even grass only grows for a grand total of 4 months this place isn't covered in snow). Population consists of a few dozen humans and a few dozen dwarves. Favoruite past time? Drunkenly dancing to the tune of people banging on the metal pots, while a human female keeps repeating the words "bochka, bass, kolbasit solo, kolbajser po poyas golyy."
In about a year. Which is really a damn shame, because on paper, feature wise, Google+ is the superior social network.

Circles were a great thing. Three-column layout was another great thing about it (the wider your monitor, the more you appreciate it. It was bae on 21:9). If you uploaded a picture, it didn't outright cripple it, apngs worked fine where most everywhere else (especially on facebook) you get an over-compressed jpeg.

Collections are even better. You like the content this one person posts to one of the collections, but don't care much about their other posts? Fine, just follow the collection without following the person. You generally enjoy content of this one person except for all those minion cancer shit they sometimes post? If they're a decent human being and post the minion cancer to a separate collection, you can just unfollow that particular collection and keep enjoying everything else. As a poster, collections were a nifty way to separate your posts into bins.

All in all, G+ is/was the best social network in terms of features.

And while — overall — not many people used G+, it still had some pretty strong tabletop RPG communities (with a side dish of (fantasy) map-making communities), and it's pretty shitty having those disperse across 10 different alternative sites.

On the other hand, it's easy to see why Google decided they're pulling the plug. The quality of content in 'Trending' was consistently decreasing: from interesting tech articles and photography at the beginning, and then — about two or three years down the line — 'Trending' became outright normie shit. Teenage girl memes, Justin Bieber and One Direction videos, Cooking gifs — and when you thought 'trending' content couldn't get worse, political posts happened (and those were always either ultra-conservative or ultra-liberal retarded circlejerks). Eventually, political shit started sticking to just about any trending post, and in the past 6-12 months the situation with bot/spam accounts posting in 'popular' started to get progressively out of hand (and Google did nothing about it). That, the fact the vast majority (90+%) of interactions with G+ lasted under 5 seconds, and the latest reveal of an API bug that would allow for data breaches comparable to CA scandal on Facebook ... as I said, I can see why.

But for those of us who found the niche on G+ ... well, G+ will be missed. RIP.

Fallen archer [sub-1h]
Boy does it feel that my body proportions are getting consistently shittier by the day.

Anyway, it's a sub-1h speedpaint of sorts, featuring a very background NPC that my party didn't get to meet (he died defending some place before characters came around to help).
The Climb
Another one for my discord D&D group. Took way longer than it should, given the end result. 4-5 hours.

Special thanks to Xur from HTTYD discord for color correction, I'd have pussied out on the contrast and the pic would look much worse.
Of course we're talking about my art. Time to reflect what was the best and move on. So, without further ado...

Digital Art
I think I've always went with digital art first and photography second. I don't see why this year should be any different.

I've been mainly drawing smaller pieces that didn't take too long to make. There were only two that took longer than five hours. One was good and the other was meh — though some simple and quick paintings actually turned out decent.

The first 'Most faves' and 'most views' awards go to The Village on the Top of the World:
The Village on the top of the world by xTernal7
670 views, 53 favs.

I really like it and if I had to pick the thing I'm most proud of in my 2014 digital gallery, this would be the piece. The public seems to agree as the view/fav ratio seems quite healthy.

The second piece worth of mention is The Cottage:
The Cottage [Speedpaint] by xTernal7
I just generally like this one. I like how it turned out.

Third piece that needs a mention is Zver.
Zver by xTernal7
For some reason, I seem to fall for stuff that looks like digital watercolor, the dragon isn't entirely awful as far as anatomy goes (as long as we ignore the creature's front left leg - the one with claws visible. That one just doesn't make sense). I probably shouldn't have done the underneck/belly scales, though. With 234 views and 21 favs, the view/fav ratio isn't exactly terrible either.

I've also managed to have one dark and decent piece that actually looks good (unless it's viewed on a monitor with shit gamma issues. Happens a lot on cheap laptops). That was Jama:
Jama by xTernal7
Note though: It's dark. This piece was also submitted to only one group, so it didn't get much exposure.

My photography has actually become mildly better this year, though I was still mostly taking pictures of bees. That, and family gatherings. I managed to take some decent shots there, though I'm not sharing these on here for obvious reasons.

The second 'most faves' award goes, along to (B)icicle:
(B)icicle by xTernal7
53 favs, 355 views. I think I could say this is the most popular piece I've made in 2014 (regardless of the medium). This piece also gets the 'most comments' award (which it got with 8 comments). This piece has also made it to the 'Popular' stream on 500px.

And it's also my favourite photo. Other photos that I also deem better than the rest I've made in 2014 are:

Traditional art
This was a sad year for traditional art.

Everything else

It seems I uploaded one deviation every 12.5 days. This means I've been less active than in 2013 (one every 9.4 days). Usually on a Tuesday (8 pieces or 28% of this year's submissions). In 2013, my favourite uploading day was apparently saturday. I was most active in September (5 uploaded). Like in 2013, my favourite gallery was photography (this time with 14 deviations, one less than year before). My favourite category this year was (digital) paintings/landscapes with 7 pieces.

The rest of statistics:
Comments per deviation: 1.37 (+0.01)
Favourites per deviation: 9 (+1)
Views per deviation: 113 (+22)
Comments per day: 0.1 (-0.04)
Favourites per day: 0.73 (-0.16)
Deviation views per day: 9.03 (-0.6)

Sorry for not being too entertaining today.

I know your pain, though I enjoy being thanked sometimes XD
xTernal7 Featured By Owner Nov 17, 2011  Hobbyist General Artist
The pain in this is that everything is so fucking monotone. I got exactly one thanks-for-fav I was amused with.

Thanks for the fave on Streets of Pardis - commissioned by dinodog!

dinodog is an up and coming professional game concept artist here in Malaysia and I think he'd appreciate some feedback on the piece.

More to come from the city of Pardis, so stay tuned! :D
