Black and White by xLithium0509 Black and White by xLithium0509
Reference from :iconkhaosdog: :heart:

I seem to have a love-hate relationship with watercolor pencil :noes: The salt didn't work in the center so it's kind of...really ugly there. Sorry ;^;

It probably would have turned out a lot of better if I had just drawn it in Photoshop :bucktooth:

But at this point I'm tired of seeing it sitting on my desk, so I figured I should just upload it and get it over with.

Really nice piece! I love the duality of it, and it kinda reminds me of an old legend I've heard sometime ago!

It's a Native Americand legend on how the crows came to be black. In short, a man who turned into a white crow was warning the animals when the hunters were comming. One day Coyote came into the hunters village who were starving and decided to help them. He disguised himself as a bull elk and let himself be killed and butchered by the hunters. The crow wondering how he could have overlooked one of the animals, come closer but realized that it must have been Coyote in disguise. After a while and many tries to make Coyote turn himself back into his human form by hurting him, he came to realized that it wasn't Coyote, since the dead Elk didn't responded to his peaking. As he was about to fly away Coyote caught him and decided that, for punition, he would put him in a bonfire until Withe Crow would turn black. Then he cursed him to live a scavenger life as a bird frightened by everything.

There is another one too (that I don't remember too well) about how the crows turned back on the people and were punished by turning black, except for the one who didn't join them and stayed pure whom remained white.

So beautifully done, I love how you slip in the grey, stormy background between them, white, grey and black...and I also love the texture of the birds' feathers. :love:

This really reminds me of The Stand by Stephen King. Beautiful job. Watercolor pencils give me no end of trouble but it came out wonderfully.

Thank you! Oh, I loved that book, it's one of my favorites of King's. Makes me happy it reminds you of it, lol.

Yeah, watercolor pencils can be a pain sometimes, but they're cleaner than regular watercolor, I think.

It may also depend on the brand. I used to have them but I know I need to buy some more. 8) What kind do you have? I like how they look on bristol vellum but they look interesting on watercolor paper as well.

I use fantasia, but I'd like to experiment with a couple different brands. Fantasia is the only one I can find around here though :noes:

The only art store around here is more of a craft store and it's really expensive. Meijers sometimes has good art supplies for fairly cheap, though, but they don't have a very wide range. A Michael's is being built in town, though. I'm super excited about it :XD: I'd prefer Blick's, but the closest one is in Chicago and that's still too far.

Maybe it's the type of paper I'm using, though. I used some random watercolor paper, I'll mess around with papers when I have the money to do so. Is bristol expensive?

I have a Utrecht near me but I normally splurge online. I like utrecht.com or cheapjoes.com. Bristol board is a cardstock. It's really cheap actually.

Fantastic! It's so beautiful! I'm happy you decided not to use Photoshop, the watercolour pencils are giving this piece a whole different feel. I love it :)

You're welcome! Of course I cannot say for sure that I wouldn't have liked a Photoshop version better. I'd have to see both to compare them. But, I just like the watercolours in this very much! :)
