This map was commissioned for an upcoming tabletop fantasy roleplaying game. I had to work out techniques for several types of terrain, going through trial-and-error iterations until I decided a given region looked right. The continent of Thalyr is meant to be off-limits to adventurers in the early parts of the game, and thus it's surrounded by a perpetual storm.

I've had people comment about the "rivers lying on top of the forests" problem in this map. I admit that this simply didn't strike me as an issue when I was drawing it. I've become more sensitive to this issue as a result, and I now try to make sure it doesn't happen on later maps.

I personally don't see a problem with how the rivers were drawn. The map looks fantastic

This is great; I wish I had seen your map this morning because now 8hrs later I realize I did some things wrong :( Thanks for your inspiration-- I might restart again tomorrow :(

Thanks! I'm not sure anything is really "wrong"...but I probably know what you mean. For me, especially in the early days when I was making this map a couple of years ago, I keep having to work out how I wanted to depict certain terrain features. There are so many ways to go for each thing you're trying to draw. Some techniques look good when others do them, but not when you attempt the same thing yourself. It's always a problem-solving compromise.

Oh, thanks! This was one of my first commission jobs. It took a long time, and I figured out a lot of stuff while doing it.

great map... like the "winds" over the seas...

For a long time while working on that map I wondered how I was going to represent the winds. I decided to go more in the direction of the symbolic and the medieval, instead of the representational.

Reminds me of the "here be dragons" images on old maps... ;-)

This map was designed to be grayscale from the start, but I'm now starting to thing I should just do maps like this in color anyway. I can elegantly drop a color image to a controlled grayscale version in Photoshop any time I need to...
