Needless to say, nopony in Ponyville was sleeping at that very moment.

Black paper/cardboard has its problems when it comes to scanning, but I'm pretty happy how this came out.

Here's how the sketch looked like:

Holy Crap this is amazing! I love the idea of using black, something less traditional is a nice change of pace. Plus the use of pastels or chalk looks great as well!

Out of everything, I'd say the hardest part was to keep the colors of the rainbow in the same order for the whole piece.

Thanks! This was actually done with pencils. I would say one of the hardest parts was to keep the lines in the rainbow close to equal width, along with keeping the whole curve itself (somewhat) constant, it took a lot of measuring. Generally everything is harder with black paper.

But now that you mentioned - the order of colours in the rainbow near Ponyville in the background means that the first turn may have involved some kind of weird flip, not really sure.

Why six? This is some kind of conspiracy?
Nah, whatever. It doesn't matter, I suppose. Just a random idea?
It was good. Beautifully.
Oh, got it! Very softly drawn.

Thanks! I promise, totally not a conspiracy Wink/Razz

Very good work as always on the coloring, surprised you managed to make it look this dark with just pencils and canyons

Thanks! The paper was black, so in fact the real struggle was to make it less dark.

I bet Dash is just trying to help Luna liven up the night.

Never tried black paper myself. That's why I do so appreciate its beauty, especially when it's created by the capable hands of someone skilled with it. Love the rainbow trail through out the entire scene. It helps to put the landscape and the clouds into perspective.

Edit:
I just noticed the lights off in the distance to the right on my second viewing. A nice little extra detail. Another village maybe, not far from Ponyville?

Okay, thanks! I don't remember what the official maps tell, but I though there might as well be some other villages or towns within a travelling distance from Canterlot, as big cities tend to have.

Well, the official maps are minimalistic anyhow. They downplay the scale and mostly point to the biggest locations, so I appreciate when we see pictures like these, where Equestria is shown in its expansive magnificence.

nice, cardboard has its advantages and it's disadvantages, never tried scanning it though.

Thanks, I guess it's good as long as you don't mind some fuzziness in the dark parts.
