John never had many people in his life growing up. In his youth, he lived in the countryside, his family too stubborn, or too proud, to move away from the encroaching toxicity. As a result, they grew ill, one by one, until John was the only one left, prompting his move to Cadet City. Despite having to adjust to city life, he's glad to be out of range of the the toxic fallout, at least for now. Though it may have had ill effects on his health, that remains to be seen.

Eventually, once he'd adjusted to city life, he began to want something more. He had a decent enough job, a good apartment, and alright neighbors, but it felt... lacking. It didn't take long for him to begin seeing pokemon as a way out of this mundane life, morbid curiosity leading him to not only want to try the life of a trainer, albeit later in life than many, but he wanted to see what strange mutations, unusual forms and twisted appearances were caused by the fallout. This lead him to join the league, under the guise of taking the gym challenge, but in truth, wondering if he could create what he considered the perfect pokemon.
