Serenity by Xels034 Serenity by Xels034
After I abandoned 3 previous projects, I finally managed it to create something worth showing. Made this in only one day, and the most time I spent on this was waiting for the final render. Almost all of the scene was generated using procedual textures, I only modeled the rough shape of the clouds and the moon, the whole landscape was just a simple plane, well a simple plane which was subdivided very often :)

I used 13 texture layers for the landscape, I was afraid the texturestack would be full before having a satisfactory result, but it was enough :)

At first I couldn't do enough subdivisions so that the landscape would look good enough, I just ran out of RAM to quickly. But fortunately there is the Blender 2.5 Alpha Renderbranch :D With the so called "per tile subdivision" I managed it to subdivide my terrain often enough, without filling up my RAM too much. But the Renderbranch has even more bugs and glitches as the normal 2.5 Alpha, so some drawbacks occured. I couldn't do full anti-aliasing for this image, because this would disable raytracing ... for some reason. There are also some pixel-sized errors, but i think they aren't too obvious.

But in the end I am satisfied with the result. I'm always impressed what different things can be achieved with a single programm. Its quality is far from those astonishing images done with programs like Vue or Terragen, but I think it's still very nice, and it's one of my best so far :) Hope you like it too!

I was inspired by this image [link] , but mostly influenced by this video here: [link]
GREAT game by the way, when it's finished someday

As usual, everything created with Blender, 2.52 Alpha (Renderbranch, r28778)

Cool work, I also create landscapes in Blender, and use for this only procedural textures.

This is awesome! Where did you learn to create such realistic mountain imagery, esp. the clouds too?

Thanks. Well, the inspiration to create such mountains the way I did, provided a gamedeveloper.

[link] (here is his blog) Couldn't find his blog right now.

The rest was just trying and experience. I did a lot with procedural textures before, so I knew what I was doing. I hated the idea of unwrapping my models and UV map them. So I always relied on the precedural textures blender provides.

I also tried a lot of things with the volume-material and smoke-simulations possible in blender. I ended up hating the simulator, but the volumetrics are quite nice. And also a bit of luck. Sometimes it's like nothing is working and everything sucks and looks ugly. But then are those days, where everything you try looks like the idea in your head. And that was such a day.

I think the pain part in becoming 'better' is really practicing. You have to stay motivated and spent a lot of time experimenting (and learning through it) But there wasn't any tutorial that taught me how to do such things. I gathered inspirations, experimented a lot, and ended up learning it myself :)

For me it was (and still is) somewhat frustrating, seeing realistic renders and being unable to achieve similar qualities. But it's good to hear that you don't suffer from this problem :D Anyway, if you (or someone else) got some questions, just ask, I'm always happy to help ^^

Really cool!
Hey, the moon's dark side is too...visible. The moon also looks too flat. imho

Yes you're right I guess. I tweaked the moon a lot, and after some time I didn't saw the problems that were still present. Anyway, I think I'm too lazy to change it now :) But hopefully I will pay more attention to such things next time ^^

May I ask you what other issues are present? I just want to know to what things other people pay attention, so I can spent more time on those things next time :)

The first problem I noticed was that the lighting was a little surreal and felt to bright. And I don't really like the way that little island in the lake came out. All that is more of a personal preference but there are also stars ON the moon. Just a little problem with your moon's transparency I'd wager though. Like I said though, it is definitely the best I've seen.

oh, I dind't noticed the issue with the moon :) but good to know. If I get back to landscapes someday, I try to remember those things.
