"It began with the forging of the great rings..". For some reason this deviation reminds me that part in Lord of the rings.

I looooooooooove it !!!
Purely awesome !
Did you use the fluid tool to model the lava in the first place, or did you "solid"-modeled it ?
God I wish I knew how to make such amazing things !
I would definitely need a teacher of your level !

Wow thanks. I "soldid"-modeled the molten thingy. I modeled a really low-poly and simple shape, then applied a solidify modyfier (new in 2.5, adds "depth" to your flat surface) and on top of that a subsurf modyfier. Through this I got a shape with volume and smooth curves

This is amazing? what are the settings for the hot lava? its like orange on the outside, but yellow in the inside! Would it be possible for you to tell me the settings for Blender 2.49? Thanks

This effect was achieved with a colorramp in the duffuse shader. I took the "fresnel" diffuse shader, and enabled a colorramp, the coordinates that were used were "normal" which means, depending on the angle the surface is facing towards the camera, a gradient from the colorramp is applied. where 90 is yellow and 0/180 is a dark red color.

Funny thing is, your question sounds like especially asked to explain the "feature" used for that xD
