The Flamberge by XD-385 The Flamberge by XD-385
Here it is. The trusty blade of Ashton Redford Crimson. The zweihander, Flamberge. This sweet piece of work was made by my friend from Germany. :iconanubic90: He originally wanted to draw Soul Edge, but decided on the Flamberge instead since it has never been drawn on paper before. Funny thing is that zweihanders were invented there in Germany, so it must be a familiar sight in museums. Anyway, time for a little background on Ashton's primary weapon.

During his days at the academy, Ashton had trained to wield a lance. But after graduating, he began to feel that a lance did not suit him well and he began to experiment with a variety of weapons to try and find the one that felt right for him. Due to Garyson Oak specializing in the use of rapiers, Ashton tried them out himself, but found that he had no apitude for the thin blade as he lost every single duel with his friend. After 20 losses, Ashton began to try out other weapons. He tried using a lance again, but he found that it was not very suited for sweeping attacks and could only perform thrust attacks. But even then, he felt that the length felt right. He then tried another type of large weapon. A mighty battleaxe. But while the weapon had good reach and more power, it was somewhat heavy and awkward for Ashton to use as Garyson was too quick to be struck. After several more duels with new weapons, including a particularly embarrassing loss while wielding a heavy chakram that could not return to the wielder, Ashton began to search through various armories for inspiration.:gallery:

Ashton felt that the lance suited him well since it had great reach, but he always felt that a sword was his ideal weapon. And one day, he found a weapon that had the blade of a sword and the length of a lance. A zweihander.:wow: It was the perfect anti-lance weapon as it had been created to counter lances at the frontlines by hewing through pikemen. However, Ashton quickly noticed some design flaws. While the blade was long, it was not very thick or wide, making it easier to break and harder to defend with. But Ashton was still convinced that it was the kind of weapon he was destined to wield. After thinking it over some more, he paid a visit to a local swordsmith.

Ashton requested that the swordsmith craft for him a zweihander with some modifications. He requested that the blade be made no less than twice as thick as usual and that the blade be much wider to make it easier to block incoming attacks. And on a whim, he asked that the blade be forged into a flamberge design, making it exceptionally hard to defend against. And to make it even more durable, he asked for the sword to be crafted with steel instead of iron since it is less brittle and stronger.

After a few weeks, the sword was ready. And it was just as Ashton had hoped it would be.:w00t!: But back then, steel was much more exspensive to use as it was harder to forge and more costly to do so. But being a wealthy viscount, Ashton gladly paid the fee.:handshake: Even so, there were some problems. While the sword was lighter since it was made of steel instead of iron, it was still quite heavy due to the additional materials used to make the blade wider and thicker. While Ashton was able to swing it, it required great effort and he could not hope to wield it properly on his own. The solution came in the form of a travelling shinobi of the Far East. While visiting the kingdom of Rohta, he made contact with Ashton out of recommendation from the queen. His name was Koga and the two of them quickly forged a bond. During his stay, Koga taught Ashton some skills that other shinobi used. But what helped Ashton the most was the art of Chakra Control.:meditate: With it, he was able to increase his physical strength up to five fold. Ashton then found that with his newfound strength, he could wield his sword as easily as a dagger, even with one hand. And when he defeated Garyson that month with a single swing of his sword, Ashton knew that he had found the perfect weapon. :boogie:

However, Ashton quickly began to worry about the possibilties surrounding his new weapon. There were many warriors out there, many that were more physically built than he was who could wield his weapon just as easily as he could. And his sword was a one-of-a-kind custom zweihander with devastating power. If someone with great strength and evil in its heart got a hold of Ashton's weapon, it could mean the death of hundreds. To this effect, Ashton sought the aid of his servant, the wise Lugia scholar Chiara. With her vast knowledge, she placed a special incantation onto the blade. With this safeguard in place, the blade could not strike down anyone who did not deserve harm. Should someone try to use the sword for an evil deed, the blade would resist its master by holding itself in place, preventing itself from striking the victim. The spell is held in place by writing that Ashton inscribed along the length of the blade. It reads "To defend the beloved and slay the wicked". Ashton then named his sword the Flamberge.

Being a sword crafted from steel, the Flamberge is quite durable and is resistant to rust. Its great size is also a testament to its great weight and power. Due to its weight, it is difficult to defend against. But its unique design only increases that difficulty. Due to the flamelike grooves along the edges of the blade, unpleasent vibrations are felt as the blade slides along the opponent's weapon, taking a toll on their stamina. One exception would be the mostly nonliving form of the Azure Knight. While it did not feel any pain due to the lack of bones, muscle, or internal organs, the vibrations caused by the blade forced the creature's knees to buckle, leaving it open to an additional attack. The wide blade of the Flamberge also has another use aside from acting as a shield. Due to his lack of talent with Wind Style ninjutsu, Ashton cannot use them without a special tool. To compensate, Ashton can use the wide blade of the Flamberge like a fan to stir up air to create wind.

At the age of 115, Ashton chose to be buried with his trusty blade shortly before his death.:tombstone: But when Ashton was reborn 500 years later, the Flamberge was still with him. And even after five centuries, it still remains in superb condition. While advances in firearms may have forced swords into becoming obsolete, no weapon can ever replace the Flamberge in Ashton's eyes as he continues to carry it with him in the modern world. And he always will as the Angel of the Eternal Flame.

I had a feeling the appearance of the flamberge was going to be something like that but with a bit more WoW-ness to it for some strange reason. Ahh, to hell with it, is just plain awesome!

due to the grooves on the sword
any blade attack will ricochet off the sword...
plus being wider than usual, it can be held sideways for defending against elemental attacks...

still a nice choice in swords.
and now i have an idea of what the flamberge looks like...

to tell the truth, i was going to ask you what the flamberge looked like the other day.

Nice, and being completely of German heritage, it's cool to see something that I know was in my family's past, especially when it's used in one of my favorite stories of all time!

Tell your friend he did a great job, and give yourself a pat on the back for your research into the sword itself, not many people (in America) realize that the Flamberge design was for more than simple aesthetics, although it's debatable how useful a wave-blade is, when the ripples are that large... Ah well, I suppose it *does* look way cooler with the enlarged waves.

Cool stuff.

The bigger the blade, the larger the grooves. Most thinner blades had smaller waves.

That does make sense: the thicker the metal, the harder it would be to tool fine curves into it using traditional Western forging methods, wouldn't it?

I knew it, it's the very same Flamberge that Nightmare used in SC2. But if Ashton's Flamberge can break through his opponent's defense, how come they never break through his?

I did some research on the type of blade the Flamberge has and found that the "guard-breaking" attributes only affects the one who is struck with the blade, not the other way around. It seems Team Soul decided to make it go both ways in SC2 to make it more like a literal "double-edged weapon". It does not have that property in SC3 and even seems more useful to me.
